Kanguva Review: Suriya’s Action-Packed Comeback Falters Due To A Plot That Struggles To Keep Up

Kanguva brings Suriya in a power-packed role with a visually stunning epic. However, its poor plot execution might test your patience.

After a long wait, Kanguva finally hits theatres, marking Suriya’s big-screen return after nearly two and a half years. Directed by Siva, this action-adventure fantasy film was hyped up to be a visual spectacle, complete with epic battles, time-travel twists, and intense emotions.

With ambitious promotions, Suriya and producer Gnanavel Raja set lofty expectations. But, does Kanguva live up to its massive hype, or does it crash and burn? Let’s find out!

Kanguva: Plot

The film toggles between two timelines—2024 and 1070 AD. In the present, Suriya plays Francis Theodore, a bounty hunter with a mysterious past. Partnered with his ex, Angelina (Disha Patani), he’s on a mission to catch elusive criminals.

During a hunt, Francis encounters a young boy, Zeta, with whom he feels an inexplicable bond. Flashbacks reveal the tale of Kanga, a tribal leader from the 11th century facing threats from various clans, including Bobby Deol’s Udhiran.

The movie explores the connection between Francis, Kanga, and Zeta, blending modern-day action with a historical revenge saga.

Kanguva: Performances

Suriya is, as always, a powerhouse. He gives it his all, especially in the period portions where he portrays Kanga with intensity. However, the writing doesn’t fully utilise his talent, making his heroic moments feel one-dimensional.

Bobby Deol is underwhelming as the villain, limited to growling and dramatic head tilts. Disha Patani, unfortunately, is reduced to eye-candy status with minimal impact.

Yogi Babu and other supporting cast are given forgettable roles, and even the much-hyped cameo towards the end feels like a wasted opportunity.

Kanguva: Analysis

Visually, Kanguva is a treat. Vetri Palanisamy’s cinematography beautifully captures lush forests and battle sequences. But visuals alone can’t save a film bogged down by a messy screenplay.

The plot, despite its potential, is riddled with inconsistencies and cringe-worthy emotional beats. The action scenes, though ambitious, lack the finesse of films like Baahubali. Add in a deafening background score by Devi Sri Prasad, and you’re left wishing for a moment of peace.

Kanguva: Verdict

Kanguva is a loud, chaotic spectacle that bites off more than it can chew. It’s packed with ambition but falls short in execution, leaving audiences more exhausted than exhilarated.

Watch it if you’re a die-hard Suriya fan, but it’s a test of patience for everyone else. If there’s a sequel in the works, I hope Siva takes a more grounded approach next time.

Kanguva: Rating
