Main Atal Hoon that released today is a biopic of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was one of the most influential and respected leaders in Indian politics. The film chronicles his life from his childhood to his retirement, covering his role in the freedom struggle, the emergency, the nuclear tests, the Kargil war, and the peace initiatives with Pakistan.
The film is directed by Ravi Jadhav, who has won several national awards for his previous films, but fails to deliver a compelling and engaging film this time. The film stars Pankaj Tripathi as Vajpayee, along with a supporting cast of Benedict Garrett, Harshal Gire, Rajesh Dubeay, and others.
Main Atal Hoon: Plot
The film begins with a young Vajpayee, who is inspired by the freedom fighters and joins the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a volunteer. He becomes a close associate of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), and participates in various political and social movements. He also develops his skills as a poet and an orator, and impresses many with his eloquence and wit. He is elected to the parliament for the first time in 1957, and becomes a prominent opposition leader.
The film then depicts the major events and challenges that Vajpayee faced in his political career, such as the emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, the formation and dissolution of the Janata Party, the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the demolition of the Babri Masjid, the 1996 and 1998 general elections, the Pokhran-II nuclear tests, the Lahore bus diplomacy, the Kargil war, the Agra summit, the 2002 Gujarat riots, and the 2004 general election. The film also shows his personal life, his relationships with his family, friends, colleagues, and rivals, and his health issues.
Main Atal Hoon: Performance
The only saving grace of the film is Pankaj Tripathi’s portrayal of Vajpayee. He nails the look, the voice, the mannerisms, and the charisma of the former prime minister, and delivers a nuanced and powerful performance. He captures the various facets of Vajpayee’s personality, such as his humour, his wisdom, his courage, his compassion, and his dignity. He also conveys the emotions and conflicts that Vajpayee faced in his personal and professional life, such as his loneliness, his regrets, his frustrations, and his hopes. Tripathi is ably supported by the rest of the cast, who play their roles convincingly. Benedict Garrett as the British forest officer who mentors Vajpayee in his youth, Harshal Gire as Nanaji Deshmukh, Vajpayee’s friend and colleague, Rajesh Dubeay as Pramod Mahajan, Vajpayee’s trusted aide, and Krishna Saajnani as the reporter who interviews Vajpayee, are some of the notable performances.
Main Atal Hoon: Analysis
The film is a disappointing and dull biopic of a beloved leader, who is widely regarded as one of the best prime ministers India ever had. The film does not shy away from showing the controversies and criticisms that Vajpayee faced, but also does not delve deep into the complexities and contradictions of his politics and ideology. The film is more of a tribute than a critique, and focuses on the positive aspects of Vajpayee’s legacy, such as his vision, his statesmanship, his moderation, and his poetry. The film also tries to balance the perspectives of different parties and communities, and shows how Vajpayee tried to bridge the gaps and foster harmony among them. However, the film fails to engage the audience, and feels like a long and boring documentary rather than a cinematic experience. The film is poorly-researched and poorly-written, and uses archival footage, news clippings, and poems to fill the gaps and add some interest to the story. The film is also poorly-directed and poorly-edited, and lacks a steady pace and a smooth flow throughout. The film has a bland and unrealistic production design, and a monotonous and uninspiring background score.
Main Atal Hoon: Verdict
“Main Atal Hoon” is a film that could have been a lot better, but ends up being a mediocre and forgettable film that does not do justice to the life and achievements of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, or to the performance of Pankaj Tripathi, who brings the legendary leader to life on screen. The film is a respectful, oversimplified and sincere homage to a man who shaped the history and destiny of India, and who left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of millions of Indians. But the film is not a masterpiece, nor is it a worthy and enjoyable film that deserves a watch.
