Sukhee Movie Review: Shilpa Shetty And Kusha Kapila Deliver Strong Performances, But The Film Suffers From Clichéd And Aimless Plot

The film is a mediocre version of the English Vinglish.

Sukhee, directed by Sonal Joshi and starring Shilpa Shetty Kundra, is a slice-of-life comedy-drama that explores the journey of a homemaker who rediscovers her sense of self after reuniting with old friends. The film is mixed bag, with emotional depth and performances, but clichéd plot and execution.

Sukhee: Plot

“Sukhee” is a light-hearted, slice-of-life story of Sukhpreet ‘Sukhee’ Kalra, a 38-year-old Punjabi housewife who, fed up with her everyday, mundane life, goes to Delhi to attend her school reunion. The film follows Sukhee as she relives her 17-year-old self and goes through a series of experiences in a span of just seven days. When she reconnects with her childhood friends, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, challenging societal norms and expectations. This journey leads to Sukhee coming out rekindled, reborn and making the most difficult transition in her life – from being a wife and a mother, to being a woman again.

Sukhee: Performances

Shilpa Shetty Kundra plays the titular role of Sukhee and delivers a winsome performance, easily connecting with her character and portrays the emotional struggles of Sukhee. Her portrayal of Sukhee’s plight and battles is one of her most memorable performances to date. Kusha Kapila also delivers an impressive performance, despite having an under-written storyline backing her character.

Sukhee: Analysis

One of the film’s strengths is the chemistry between the four friends, which is portrayed convincingly and makes one empathize with the characters. However, the plot is often aimless, and the execution lacks the spark needed to fully engage the viewers. The film is a mediocre version of the English Vinglish.

The cinematography, production design, and costume in Sukhee have been a mixed bag, with some aspects receiving praise for their contribution to the film’s overall vision, while others have been criticized for their lack of innovation and originality.

The film’s cinematography, handled by Dee’s camera lens, has been able to capture the emotional depth of the story and the performances. However, there is a lack of visual flair and innovation, with the film often relying on conventional techniques and framing.

Udai Prakash Singh’s production design has been credited with elevating the director’s vision and creating a believable world for the characters. The attention to detail in the sets and locations is evident, but the overall design lacks originality and fails to leave a lasting impression.

The costumes effectively reflect the characters’ personalities and the changing dynamics of their relationships but again lack innovation and originality.

Sukhee: Verdict

“Sukhee” is a film that mirrors the inner turmoil of almost every middle-class housewife who marries early and forfeits her dreams for love The film touches upon societal perceptions of housewives and unaccounted work and wasted potential. However, the film lacks pace, struggling to be engaging, and becoming too preachy. The narrative shifts gear and loses attention once the action moves to Delhi.

Sukhee attempts to be a modern film about women oppressing their aspirations, but it falls short and ends up feeling pretentious. The idea behind the story holds some water, but the execution and the clichéd climax disappoint . The film could have benefited from a better-executed and more innovative storyline, considering the talent of the cast and crew involved.
