Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video Movie Review: Rajkummar Rao And Triptii Dimri Attempt To Revive 90s Through A Weak Script

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video has its moments but ultimately falls flat due to a disjointed plot and underutilised performances.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, brings Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri together in a comedy set in the 90s.

‘Work of fiction inspired by true events’ reads the disclaimer before we are transported to the nostalgic era of the 1990s. Released today in cinemas, the movie draws on 90s aesthetics and references, intending to capture the hearts of viewers who crave a comedic throwback.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video: Plot

The story revolves around Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), a quick-witted mehndi artist, and Vidya (Triptii Dimri), a doctor who has just completed her MBBS. Set against the backdrop of 1997 Rishikesh, the two main characters engage in a love story that feels disconnected from their professional lives. They manipulate their families into accepting their marriage and rush to their honeymoon in Goa rather than Vaishnodevi.

Vicky has a newspaper article clipping that claims American couples record themselves having sex, which helps their married life. Vicky proposes recording their intimate moments with Vidya, and they do. Predictably, the CD goes missing when their house is robbed the very next day, unleashing a series of comedic misadventures as they attempt to retrieve it. In parallel, there are Vicky’s sister Chanda (Mallika Sherawat) and the investigating officer in the robbery case (Vijay Raaz).

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video: Performance

Despite their best efforts, Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri are let down by a weak script that doesn’t fully utilise their talents. Rao, who usually brings depth to his roles, is confined to a formulaic portrayal of Vicky that feels repetitive and underwhelming. Triptii Dimri, making her second foray into comedy, also seems restricted, with little opportunity to showcase any dynamic chemistry with Rao. However, she is better in this film than in Bad Newz.

Mallika Sherawat, making her Bollywood return as Chanda, is a bright spot, providing a few moments of levity but is wasted in her role.

Meanwhile, Vijay Raaz’s comedic timing is as dependable as ever, but he too is constrained by the script. Tiku Talsania as Vicky’s grandfather is passable. Ashwini Kalsekar’s character is also wasted and makes no difference to the story.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video: Analysis

The film kicks off high on comedy, keeping the laughs coming in the first half. It starts strong, with a charming, quick-paced story, but soon gets sidetracked by needless subplots.

The plot takes us on tangents—from the househelp’s crush on Vijay Raaz’s character to a politician’s sex tape scheme, to a quirky family heirloom sword, and even a nosy photographer who is smitten with Chanda. These side stories pile up, pulling us away from the main narrative and making it hard to stay invested.

While it aims to capture the vibe of the 90s, the movie has trouble balancing its pace and tone. The director, Raaj Shaandilyaa, tries to blend comedy, drama, and even a bit of horror, but it all ends up feeling a bit chaotic.

The occasional 90s songs by Kumar Sanu are a nice nostalgic touch, but they don’t add much to the overall experience. Despite borrowing from the era, the movie doesn’t quite carve out its own identity, leaving it as a muddled tribute rather than a fresh take on 90s Bollywood.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video goes on for far too long (152 minutes). It could have benefited from being much shorter. The music by Sachin-Jigar works in the situations, yet nothing stands out. Not even one song is a hit track. The VFX and production quality are below par as if the entire budget was spent on bringing more and more characters into the script.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video: Verdict

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video has its moments but ultimately falls flat. The movie lacks the cohesion needed to deliver a fulfilling comedy, and despite its talented cast, it struggles to engage the audience effectively.

The disjointed plot and underutilised performances lead to a disappointing experience, especially for those expecting a laugh-out-loud tribute to classic Bollywood. While there is some potential for nostalgia, the film’s execution leaves much to be desired.
