Taapsee Pannu is finally stepping back into theatres, and the comeback comes with a familiar creative ally. After nearly two years away from the big screen, the actor reunites with director Anubhav Sinha for Assi, a hard-hitting courtroom drama that is positioning itself as an “urgent watch” in a market still dominated by tentpole spectacles.
The pre-release temperature check suggests this one will not explode out of the gate on hype. Instead, Assi is leaning into something far more old school: strong reviews, steady awareness-building, and the hope that word of mouth does the heavy lifting once audiences actually walk out of the cinema.
Assi Advance Booking And Opening Day Prediction
Advance booking for Assi opened on Wednesday, just two days before the film’s February 20, 2026 theatrical release. Early traction has been muted, which is not unusual for a niche, issue-driven courtroom drama. The film’s key advantage right now is that critics’ reviews are already out and largely positive, offering the kind of validation that can translate into late bookings.
Trade expectations, as quoted in the report, peg Assi for a ₹1.50 to ₹2 crore opening day in India, with optimistic projections pushing it up to ₹2.50 crore net if the post-show chatter lands well. That range places it closer to the opening-day territory of Mulk than Taapsee’s stronger solo openers like Pink and Thappad, both of which crossed ₹4 crore net on Day 1.
Sinha, for his part, is betting on audience appetite for grounded stories. In the same report, he said, “The audience is waiting for Assi, not specifically Assi, the film, but a film like Assi.”
Assi is written by Gaurav Solanki and produced by T-Series. The film stars Taapsee Pannu as a lawyer fighting a rape case, with Kani Kusruti in a key role. The ensemble includes Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Kumud Mishra, Supriya Pathak, and Manoj Pahwa, with cameos by Naseeruddin Shah and Divya Dutta.
Taapsee Pannu’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Over the past 48 months, Taapsee has balanced big-screen visibility with buzzy OTT choices. Her recent credits include Dunki (2023), directed by Rajkumar Hirani and led by Shah Rukh Khan. In 2024, she returned with the theatrical ensemble comedy Khel Khel Mein and also headlined Netflix’s romantic thriller sequel Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, which premiered on August 9, 2024.
Looking ahead, Taapsee has Gandhari lined up as a Netflix film slated for a 2026 release, bringing her back into darker, high-intensity territory. She also has the long-delayed Woh Ladki Hai Kahaan? with Pratik Gandhi awaiting an official release date, making Assi her key theatrical pivot at the moment.
