Hollywood loves a breakout, but Backrooms has delivered the kind of box office jolt that makes the industry sit up. Kane Parsons, the 20-year-old filmmaker who first turned an eerie internet myth into a viral YouTube phenomenon, has now powered that same concept into a major theatrical event for A24.
The psychological horror film opened in the United States on May 29, 2026, and its first-day numbers immediately pushed it into record territory for the indie studio. Built from the viral fear of endless yellow rooms and liminal spaces, Backrooms has moved far beyond online lore and into the centre of the summer box office conversation.
Backrooms Scores A24’S Biggest Box Office Breakout
Backrooms earned $38.4 million on its opening Friday, including $10.4 million from Thursday previews. That number has already put the film on course for a massive domestic opening weekend in the $85 million to $90 million range.
For A24, this is a landmark moment. The studio’s previous biggest opening weekend belonged to Alex Garland’s Civil War, which debuted with $25.5 million in 2024. Backrooms has blown past that benchmark in a single day, underlining just how powerfully online horror fandom can translate to theatrical demand when the concept lands with mainstream audiences.
The scale of the performance is even more striking because the film was produced on a lean budget of around $10 million. In a marketplace dominated by franchise titles and studio tentpoles, Parsons’ feature debut has become a reminder that a sharp, unsettling idea can still cut through the noise.
What Backrooms Is About
Directed by Kane Parsons, Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell. The film was released by A24 and was produced with companies including 21 Laps Entertainment, Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment and Oddfellows Pictures. James Wan, Shawn Levy and Osgood Perkins are among its producers.
The horror thriller follows Clark, a struggling small-town furniture store owner, who discovers a strange glowing doorway hidden inside his showroom. The portal leads him into the Backrooms, an endless maze of empty, yellow-lit spaces that begins to distort his sense of reality.
As Clark disappears into the dimension, his therapist Mary begins investigating what happened to him. Her search pulls her toward the same doorway, forcing her into the surreal nightmare he could not escape.
From Youtube Horror To Theatrical Event
The origins of Backrooms trace back to the internet creepypasta built around a haunting image of empty yellow rooms and fluorescent lights. Parsons expanded that mythology in 2022 through The Backrooms (Found Footage) on YouTube, where his self-taught visual effects and unnerving atmosphere drew millions of views.
That viral success became the foundation for the A24 feature, making Parsons one of the youngest filmmakers to front a major studio-backed horror release. The film also arrives during a strong period for creator-driven horror, with audiences showing clear appetite for stories born outside the traditional Hollywood pipeline.
In India, Backrooms will arrive in cinemas on June 12, 2026, with PVR INOX Pictures handling the release.
