Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi’s Batwara 1947 has entered theatres with a weak first-day number, collecting Rs 5.25 – 5.50 crore nett on Friday as the Independence Day box office battle swung decisively toward Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2. For a film carrying holiday-release advantage, a major star, and the weight of a celebrated filmmaker’s comeback, this is not the kind of opening that offers breathing room. It puts the film under immediate pressure to recover fast.
Film needs massive jump tomorrow on national Holiday and good weekend in order to come out with at least an average result. As of now box office prospects look really gloomy for the film.
That pressure looks even sharper because of the competition. Awarapan 2 arrived with much stronger sequel-driven excitement, and the response on day one has underlined just how lopsided the clash has become. Instead of building steady momentum from its opening shows, Batwara 1947 has found itself boxed into a weekend where anything less than a massive jump on Saturday and Sunday will keep it firmly on the back foot. In box office terms, the opening has not just been soft, it has been damaging.
Why This Slow Start Hurts More Than Usual
The underperformance stands out because Batwara 1947 was positioned as far more than a standard release. Originally announced as Lahore 1947, the film was officially retitled ahead of its August 14, 2026 release and came backed by Aamir Khan Productions, with Rajkumar Santoshi directing a Partition-set drama fronted by Sunny Deol. The cast also includes Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol and Abhimanyu Singh, giving the project both nostalgia value and ensemble heft.
Its source material added further prestige. The film is adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, a work long respected for its emotional and political depth. That context is exactly why the weak opening feels more striking. This was a film sold on scale, memory and cultural weight, not merely star presence. During promotions, the makers leaned into that tone with the line, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch #Batwara1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.” At the trailer launch, Rajkumar Santoshi also recalled late Dharmendra’s reaction after watching the film: “Yeh picture bahut chalegi”.
Sunny Deol’s Comeback Run Faces An Unexpected Box Office Check
That makes this stumble especially notable in Sunny Deol’s current career phase. After Gadar 2 exploded in 2023 and re-established him as a major theatrical force, expectations naturally rose around every big-screen move that followed. Batwara 1947 was supposed to build on that resurgence with a prestige-driven, emotionally loaded film. Instead, its weak opening has interrupted the narrative of uninterrupted momentum.
Even so, Deol’s slate remains significant. Jaat released in 2025 with moderate success followed by Hit Border 2 earlier this year. and he now moves toward Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Part 1, where he is playing Lord Hanuman, with the film scheduled for theatrical release on November 6, 2026. He also had release of Netflix title Ikka last month. That makes the Batwara 1947 start more than a one-day story. It is an early test of whether Deol’s renewed box office pull can extend beyond franchise nostalgia into new-age period drama territory.
