Nagraj Manjule, a Marathi filmmaker known for films such as Fandry and Sairat, is making his Hindi directorial debut with Jhund, a film starring Amitabh Bachchan that hit theatres on Friday (March 5). The sports drama is the first time the director and actor have worked together.

Jhund stars Amitabh Bachchan as a retired sports coach who uses football to rehabilitate slum kids and keep them away from lives of crime and drugs. It is based on the life of Vijay Barse, the founder of NGO Slum Soccer.

Jhund is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Amitabh Bachchan, one of India’s biggest commercial stars, and Nagraj Manjule, a renowned director noted for his films’ socio-political overtones. Because the filmmakers have kept their promotional efforts low-key, the film’s box office success will rely solely on word of mouth.

As per early trends flowing in, Jhund did a business of 1.50 crores on day 1. It’s really a slow start considering the names attached with it.
