Samrat Prithviraj, the newest film from Akshay Kumar, dispels the misconception that a movie only needs a big star to be successful. There are box office flops, just like box office hits that set records and make a killing. Actors were once heralded and their famous name was sufficient to gate crash the ticket office. The film business, however, observed that even the best directors, producers, performers, and the most extravagant budget can’t salvage a movie if the plot fails to enthrall the audience. As audiences’ watching habits and comprehension of cinema changed. Let’s examine the recent biggest flop action films in Bollywood despite big actors, budgets and studios.
Satyamava Jayate 2:
Starring John Abraham in a triple role, Satyameva Jayate 2 was backed by big names of the industry including Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani and Nikkhil Advani. The film was made on a budget of 61 cr and clashed with Salman Khan’s Antim at the box office. The film did not even pass 20 cr at the worldwide box office and hence was one of the disasters in the action genre.
Attack:
Since John Abraham’s debut film was based on science fiction and action, it had a completely different premise from other Bollywood films. John claimed that the film was an experiment that he did to present the audience with something fresh and entirely distinct. The movie was originally scheduled to be released in 2019, but Covid caused the release dates to be postponed until 1 April 2022.
The film’s budget was 80 CR, but it only grossed 55 CR at the box office. Despite this, the director and the cast are extremely pleased with themselves for creating a unique concept movie in response to the Covid 19 Pandemic.
Dhaakad:
The box office performance of Kangana Ranaut’s film Dhaakad was appalling, and it couldn’t compete with Bhool Bhuliayaa 2, which was the largest Bollywood opening of the year thanks to Kartik Aaryan. The film, which cost Rs 85 crore to produce, just broke even at the box office with lifetime earnings of Rs 2.58 crore. The movie couldn’t survive the competition at the box office and faced backlash for weak storyline.
Heropanti 2:
Since part 1 of Heropanti was so well received by the public, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment decided to produce part 2 with a huge budget of 85 cr and a cast that included Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, and NawazUddin Siddiqui. The cast and script were completely different from the previous half, with the exception of the heroes and title, which is what caused the film to fail. It appears that the filmmaker made the film with the assumption that it would be successful if actors and singers were included in it. The film was one of the least well-received films of 2022 and had a lot of things missing.
Nikamma:
Shilpa Shetty and Abhimanyu Dassani starrer Nikamma has failed to impress the audience. It is a huge disaster at the box office as its numbers are continuously seeing a downward trend. The film was made on a budget of 25 crores but could not collect more than 2 cr at the box office and hence is a huge disaster.
Om:
After disasters in a row, the latest release Om: The Battle Within or Raksha Kavach Om is not showing good signs but Aditya Roy Kapur’s action avatar is a sensational topic after this release. It’s more than a week now, and Aditya Roy Kapoor’s OM couldn’t reach 10 Cr at Box Office. Aditya Roy Kapoor’s film OM hasn’t even made 10 crores at the box office and hence it can be counted under the disasters list.
Khuda Haafiz 2:
The first chapter of action hero Vidyut Jammwal’s Khuda Haafiz film, which earned good reviews after its post-Covid-19 release and straight OTT release on Disney+ Hotstar, was released in theaters, however, the sequel’s box office performance was unsuccessful and below par.
Reasons:
* Audience want top stars like Hrithik Roshan in War and Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh in Sooryavanshi plus both these films were on par with South or any other action film in terms of scale.
* Vidyut Jammwal or Aditya Roy Kapur can only work in action films if story has something new or shocking element to offer.
* A blockbuster song (Tip Tip in Sooryavanshi or songs of War) is must to open an action film since 90’s in Bollywood.
* Stop doing dated PR and marketing stunts as social media makes them look like fools.
