Manoj Bajpayee‘s latest big-screen outing has begun on a worrying note. Governor, the Hindi financial thriller that opened in cinemas on June 12, added Rs 1.10 crore nett on day two after collecting Rs 0.90 crore nett on its opening day, taking its two-day India total to Rs 2 crore nett. At this pace, the film is shaping up to be an early box office disappointment.
The film had the advantage of a recognizable lead and a politically charged premise, but the initial response has not translated into a meaningful theatrical push. With just modest growth on its second day, Governor now faces a steep climb if it hopes to put together even a respectable first weekend total.
Governor’s Day 2 Box Office Update
The day two hold offered only limited relief. Governor moved from Rs 0.70 crore nett on Friday to Rs 1 crore nett on Saturday, but that rise still leaves the film in a fragile position. The current trend suggests a muted weekend, and the pressure will now shift to whether it can show uncommon steadiness through the weekdays.
The source report stated, “The movie should hold strong on weekdays in order to reach a respectable total.” It also added, “For now, Governor is expected to wind up its entire theatrical run under the Rs. 10 crore nett mark.” That same report went even further, saying, “That said, the movie is heading for a disastrous end at the Indian box office.”
Another key factor behind the weak start appears to be audience reception. The source noted, “The movie garnered a mixed-bag reaction among the audience, which is one of the major reasons why it is struggling. Had the film received better word-of-mouth, its box office picture could have been slightly better.”

About Governor
Directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under Sunshine Pictures, Governor stars Manoj Bajpayee, Adah Sharma, and Noushad Mohamed Kunju. The 2026 Hindi release is a financial thriller inspired by the events surrounding India’s 1990 economic crisis and the institutional framework between the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of India.
At the centre of the story is an RBI Governor confronting a worsening national financial emergency. With a subject that leans heavily on policy, power, and pressure, the film aimed for urgency and relevance, but its theatrical run has opened far below where it needed to be.
Manoj Bajpayee’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Bajpayee has remained active across both theatres and streaming in the past few years. In 2024, he appeared in Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout, Bhaiyya Ji, Jugnuma: The Fable, and Despatch, the latter releasing on ZEE5. In 2025, he starred in Inspector Zende, a Netflix film, continuing his strong association with OTT platforms even as his theatrical titles struggled for major commercial traction.
In 2026, Governor released in theatres on June 12. His confirmed next release slate also includes Ghooskhor Pandat, listed as a Netflix film, while Police Station Mein Bhoot remains a confirmed upcoming project. That mix reinforces a career phase where Bajpayee continues to back varied material, even if the box office has not always matched his critical reputation.
