Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan, and Ananya Panday’s historical courtroom drama, Kesari Chapter 2, released in theatres on Friday.
The film stars Akshay Kumar as legendary lawyer C. Sankaran Nair and explores the untold story behind the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The incident, which occurred on April 13, 1919, during the festival of Baisakhi in Amritsar, is considered one of the darkest chapters in India’s colonial history.
Thousands had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh to peacefully protest against the Rowlatt Act and demand the release of leaders Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew. British officer Brigadier General Reginald Dyer ordered his troops to open fire on the unarmed crowd without warning.
Kesari 2 Heading For 30 Crore Weekend
Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi, Kesari Chapter 2 opened on a decent note at the box office on Friday. It collected Rs 7.84 crore on the first day of its release. Film collected 4.50 crore in top three national chains which was 60% of all India business. Film did well in pockets like Gurgaon, Chandigarh and Delhi but most of the areas still need improvement.
The Good Friday holiday benefitted the movie on day one in some way. But film received acceptance from audience in big way as film grew by 30% that too post holiday which in a way 70% growth. Film collected 10.08 crore net on day two. Film jumped by 45% in Nizam, West Bengal and central India. It almost doubled its numbers in Kerala due to local factor as C Shankaran Nair was from Kerala.
Film has 2 – day total of 17.92 crore net and it will score big on Sunday. Film is almost certain to cross 29 – 30 crore net over the weekend and then solid hold on weekdays can take film to a safe zone.
Certified ‘A—Adult Only’ by the Central Board Of Film Certification, the recently released movie has received strong buzz and positive word of mouth among cinephiles. Also starring R Madhavan and Ananya Panday, the courtroom drama is an adaptation of a book titled The Case That Shook The Empire.
Kesari Chapter 2, which is jointly backed by Dharma Productions, Leo Media Collective, and Cape of Good Films, has the potential to register a good opening weekend.
Set against the backdrop of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Kesari Chapter 2 is locking horns with the holdover release, Jaat, at the box office. Both the movies have different target audiences. It is yet to be determined if Akshay Kumar and R Madhavan’s movie can sustain itself well in the coming days.
It marks the spiritual sequel to Akshay Kumar’s 2019 release, Kesari, which was based on the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi.
