The comedy-drama Khel Khel Mein, featuring Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Taapsee Pannu, and Vaani Kapoor, hit theatres on Independence Day. Directed by Muddasir Aziz, the film faced stiff competition from John Abraham’s Vedaa and the much-anticipated horror-comedy Stree 2.
The film’s lacklustre performance was a shocker, especially given the big holiday release.
Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein Debuts With Dismal Opening Despite Big Holiday Release
Despite the holiday boost, Khel Khel Mein struggled to make a significant impact, opening with a disappointing Rs 5.23 crore.
On its debut, it was overshadowed by Stree 2, which dominated the box office, and even Vedaa, positioning KKM as the third choice among the three films.
The film saw slightly better numbers in urban centres but still fell short of expectations. Ideally, with the holiday advantage, Khel Khel Mein should have crossed the Rs 10 crore mark.
Instead, it struggled to attract large audiences, despite a reasonable occupancy rate of 40.26% across Hindi cinemas. The film did somewhat better in Mumbai, where it achieved a 45.25% occupancy rate, and in Delhi and NCR, with 50.5% occupancy.
This underperformance is particularly concerning for Akshay Kumar, as KKM marks his third flop of the year. His previous films, Sarfira, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and Mission Raniganj, also failed to make a mark at the box office.
Although Khel Khel Mein outperformed some of his recent duds—Sarfira), Mission Raniganj, Selfiee, and BellBottom —it still fell short of what was hoped for.
Stree 2 Dominates The Box Office Followed By Vedaa
Stree 2 remains a dominant force at the box office, and Vedaa has managed to capture a better share of the audience, benefiting from strong spot bookings and wider appeal. Khel Khel Mein had an initial edge over Vedaa but failed to sustain its momentum, struggling to convert early interest into significant box office results.
With Raksha Bandhan coming up, Khel Khel Mein has a chance to improve its performance over the extended weekend. However, it will need a major turnaround to recover from this rocky start and achieve a respectable total.
