Mohanlal’s L2 Empuraan is ruling the Malayalam box office, but its dubbed versions are failing to make an impact. While Kerala audiences have embraced the film, the Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada versions have not gained much traction.
L2 Empuraan Does Well In Malayalam, BUT Dubbed Versions Fail To Perform
Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2 Empuraan hit cinemas on March 27 with massive hype. Despite controversies and mixed reviews, the Malayalam audience turned up in big numbers. In just seven days, the film collected an impressive Rs 76.58 crore in Kerala, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
However, outside the Malayalam belt, the numbers tell a different story. Among the dubbed versions, the Tamil release performed the best, collecting Rs 2.64 crore. Telugu followed with Rs 2.34 crore, while the Hindi version brought in Rs 1.98 crore. The Kannada version fared the worst, earning just Rs 0.19 crore, failing to even cross the Rs 1 crore mark.
Mohanlal Starrer Has Collected Rs 122 Cr Globally So Far
Prithviraj and his team worked hard to promote L2 Empuraan across different states. During press events, he urged Tamil and Telugu audiences to watch the dubbed versions, highlighting the effort put into them. But the numbers suggest that the strategy did not pay off.
Despite this, the film’s overall earnings remain strong. L2 Empuraan has grossed Rs 122 crore worldwide, with Rs 92 crore from India and Rs 30 crore from overseas markets.
The weak performance of the dubbed versions raises questions. In recent years, Malayalam films have crossed language barriers, but L2 Empuraan seems to have struggled.
Maybe the story didn’t connect with non-Malayalam audiences, or the dubbing failed to capture the film’s essence. Competition from other regional releases may have also played a role.
