Maharaja Box Office: Vijay Sethupathi’s Film Earns Impressive Rs 23 Cr In Opening Weekend For China Release, Eyes Rs 150 Cr Mark Globally

Maharaja earns Rs 23 crore in its China opening weekend. It has shown an impressive growth amid positive reception from the audiences.

Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil film Maharaja has made a strong debut in China. The film has experienced a solid increase in ticket sales over the weekend. Excluding paid preview screenings, it started with CNY 3.5 million on Friday. Saturday saw a significant jump to CNY 7 million, and while the momentum slowed a little on Sunday, the film still brought in CNY 5.5 million.

Maharaja Earns Rs 23 Cr In China Opening Weekend

It has grossed CNY 20 million (USD 2.75 million / Rs. 23 crore) in its opening weekend (with paid preview screenings). The film has shown impressive growth throughout its first few days at the box office.

These figures point to a steady audience interest and a promising outlook for the film’s run in China.

Although the film had a wide release with nearly 40,000 shows per day, the occupancy rates weren’t quite strong enough to sustain such a large-scale showing. Still, with positive reception and good growth throughout the weekend, Maharaja is expected to continue performing well, with current projections pointing to a total of CNY 50 million (USD 7 million) by the end of its run.

It’s The First Indian Release After Normalisation Of Ties

This marks an important moment for Indian cinema as Maharaja represents the return of Indian films to Chinese cinemas after a prolonged absence. Indian films were a regular feature in Chinese theatres in the late 2010s, but the market dried up following geopolitical tensions and changes in Chinese movie-going culture after 2022.

While the opening numbers for Maharaja don’t match the pre-COVID figures of previous Indian blockbusters, the film is navigating a very different market. Foreign films in general have faced difficulties in China in recent years.

However, Maharaja‘s positive response could signal a shift, and if the film maintains a strong performance in the coming weeks, it may open the door for more Indian films to find success in China again.

Vijay Sethupathi Starrer To Reach Rs 150 Cr Mark Globally

Originally released in June, Maharaja had already earned Rs. 106 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing solo film for Vijay Sethupathi. With its China debut, the film’s worldwide gross has now crossed Rs. 129 crore. Experts predict that it will soon hit the Rs. 150 crore milestone, cementing its place as one of the year’s major successes.
