Indian cinema has once again made waves internationally, with Vijay Sethupathi’s thriller Maharaja scoring a stellar debut at the China box office.
This Tamil-language film grossed over Rs 10 crore (around $1.18 million) on its first day, including previews, marking one of the strongest openings for an Indian film in China post-pandemic.
Maharaja Opens With Rs 10 Cr (Including Early Screenings) At China Box Office
Released on November 29, Maharaja saw early screenings generate approximately Rs 5.4 crore ($635K), with the opening day adding another Rs 4.65 crore ($550K).
According to the box office tracker, the film attracted 100,000 admissions on its first day, with total footfalls now reaching 220,000. Its fifth-place debut on China’s daily box office rankings, despite stiff competition, underlines the film’s growing popularity.
What sets Maharaja apart is its historic release as the first Indian film in China following recent diplomatic strides between the two countries. The initiative aims to strengthen cultural ties and the film’s warm reception hints at a promising new chapter for Indian movies in China.
The suspense-packed thriller features an ensemble cast including Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, and Natty Natraj, whose performances have been pivotal to its success. With gripping storytelling and top-notch ratings, the film has garnered an impressive 8.7/10 on Douban, one of China’s largest review platforms.
However, Maharaja faced tough competition from heavyweight releases like Hollywood’s Gladiator II and the Chinese drama Her Story. Despite this, its 32,621 daily screenings show that audiences are eager for diverse content, and the film has managed to make its place.

Originally released in India on 14 June, Maharaja was a major hit on home turf. Its current global earnings, including Chinese box office numbers, have soared to Rs 116 crore.
