After more than two decades of delays and controversy, Anurag Kashyap’s banned film Paanch is finally set to hit theatres in 2025. The dark thriller, which has long been a subject of intrigue, was originally denied release due to objections from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and various other hurdles.
Now, after years of waiting, fans of Kashyap’s cinema have a reason to celebrate.
Producer Confirms The Release Of Anurag Kashyap’s Debut Directorial Film
Producer Tutu Sharma, who is also involved in the exhibition sector with the cinema chain Citara, confirmed the film’s release during a recent interview.
Sharma revealed to Bollywood Hungama that Paanch will be restored and released in cinemas within the first half of 2025. “The film was banned, and the negatives have slightly deteriorated. The restoration process has already started, and once it’s ready, we’ll release Paanch,” he said.
Paanch, which stars Kay Kay Menon, Tejaswini Kolhapure, and Aditya Srivastava, was originally made in the late ’90s but never saw the light of day due to its edgy content and CBFC issues.
The film is known for its gritty portrayal of Mumbai’s underworld, tackling themes of crime, morality, and youth rebellion. It also boasts a memorable soundtrack composed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
Paanch Called Kashyap’s BEST Film To Date
While Paanch was never officially released, it has been a cult favourite among people, especially those who admire Kashyap’s distinct filmmaking style.
According to Sharma, many believe the film to be one of Kashyap’s finest works. “Not just Kay Kay Menon, but even Tejaswini Kolhapure is brilliant in the film. In my opinion, it’s Anurag Kashyap’s best film to date,” Sharma added.
Early reviews from those who have seen it suggest that the film’s gritty, raw performances are a key highlight, with Menon’s portrayal being particularly praised.
Why Was Paanch Shelved?
The film’s troubles began with CBFC’s objections, which led to a lengthy battle before it was ultimately shelved. But, as Sharma noted, times have changed.
“The issues were resolved, but then we faced some more challenges, which is why the film was lying on the cans. But now, the trend of re-runs and older films getting their due is making a comeback,” he said.
Sharma also expressed optimism about the film’s potential & noted that there’s now an audience for films like Paanch.
