Other Mommy Opens Big As Jessica Chastain Scores A Strong Horror Start While The Social Reckoning Stumbles

Jessica Chastain has arrived in the October marketplace with exactly the kind of theatrical jolt studios want heading into Halloween. Other Mommy broke out quickly in its first day of release, giving the season a fresh horror leader as several higher profile titles fought for position behind it.

Other Mommy Takes Early Control At The Box Office

Universal released Other Mommy on October 9, with Chastain leading the supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage and produced through the Blumhouse and Atomic Monster pipeline that has repeatedly delivered fall genre hits. The story follows a young girl who becomes attached to a mysterious figure in her house who looks exactly like her mother.

Early weekend trade estimates point to Other Mommy opening above $27 million domestically after $3.6 million in Thursday previews and a Friday total that pushed the film past $12 million at the start of the frame. That puts it firmly in command of the weekend and reinforces horror’s continuing advantage in theaters, especially when a studio lands a simple, marketable hook close to Halloween.

The Social Reckoning Faces A Softer Start

The same frame brought The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s drama built around the fallout from Facebook’s public controversies. Jeremy Strong leads the film as Mark Zuckerberg, with the story drawing from the revelations tied to whistleblower Frances Haugen and reporting around the company’s internal practices.

Current weekend projections place The Social Reckoning near the $7 million mark, a muted result for a title carrying the legacy of The Social Network. The gap between the two new releases underlines how sharply the October audience is leaning toward horror over talk-driven prestige drama, even when the latter arrives with a recognizable creative brand.

Verity Holds Firm In Second Place

The weekend’s other major holdover is Verity, which continues to show strength after its October 2 debut. Directed by Michael Showalter and starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, the psychological thriller adapts Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel about a struggling writer hired to complete the work of an injured author.

After opening at No. 1 with $32.6 million last weekend, Verity is tracking for another $13 million to $15 million in its second frame. That gives the film a solid hold and keeps female-led thrillers at the center of the current box office conversation.

What This Opening Means For Other Mommy

For Universal and Blumhouse, Other Mommy is another reminder that mid-budget horror remains one of the most dependable theatrical plays in the business. The genre continues to attract younger moviegoers, works well with compact marketing campaigns, and can cut through crowded release calendars faster than more expensive adult dramas.

The opening also matters for Chastain. She has long balanced prestige projects with commercial studio films, and Other Mommy gives her a strong mainstream win at a time when star-driven horror remains one of the few spaces where original high-concept titles can still break out quickly. If the film holds through the rest of October, it could become one of the clearer success stories of the pre-Halloween box office stretch.
