Ryan Gosling has given Amazon MGM the kind of launch studios dream about. Project Hail Mary blasted off with $140.9 million worldwide in its opening frame, turning a high stakes original sci-fi gamble into the studio’s biggest global debut to date and the strongest opening weekend of 2026 so far.
That record setting start was powered by a commanding $80.5 million in North America and a further $60.4 million across 82 overseas markets, comfortably pushing the film past the previous Amazon MGM opening benchmark held by Creed III, which began with $100.4 million globally in 2023. Internationally, the strongest early territories included the United Kingdom with $10.2 million, China with $7.1 million, Australia with $5 million and South Korea with $4.3 million, while Imax added a sizable $27.6 million worldwide.
A Breakout Start For Project Hail Mary
Amazon MGM’s distribution chief Kevin Wilson hailed the film’s launch in a statement, saying, “Andy Weir’s beloved novel gave us a powerful foundation, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have created a visually stunning, heart-gripping film led by the brilliant Ryan Gosling that demands to be experienced on the biggest screen possible, together, with a crowd.”
Analyst Shawn Robbins also pointed to the film’s timing and audience appeal, saying the debut was “a testament to the power of Andy Weir’s original novel and the efforts Lord and Miller made in being faithful with the adaptation.” He added that it arrived at a moment when audiences were looking for large scale escapist storytelling in cinemas.
That momentum matters even more for Amazon MGM, which has been working to establish itself as a serious theatrical player since acquiring MGM. Project Hail Mary now stands as the company’s clearest big screen win yet, especially after a softer commercial response for earlier 2026 releases.
Ryland Grace’s High Stakes Mission Takes Center Stage
Released on March 20, 2026, Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi thriller from Amazon MGM Studios directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and adapted from Andy Weir’s bestselling novel. Gosling leads the film as Ryland Grace, a science teacher and former molecular biologist who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft and slowly realizes he has been sent on a mission to save Earth from extinction.
The cast includes Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz and Lionel Boyce. The film follows Grace as his memories return piece by piece, revealing the scale of the crisis and the unexpected bond at the center of humanity’s fight for survival.
Ryan Gosling Extends A Potent Box Office Run
The opening arrives amid a notable theatrical stretch for Gosling. He was last seen on the big screen in The Fall Guy in 2024, the action comedy with Emily Blunt that finished with $181.2 million worldwide. Before that came Barbie in 2023, where his scene stealing turn as Ken helped power the film to a massive $1.44 billion global haul and one of the defining box office runs of the decade.
On the OTT front, Gosling starred in Netflix’s The Gray Man in 2022 alongside Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. With Project Hail Mary now opening at blockbuster scale, the actor’s recent screen choices reflect a run that has moved confidently between event spectacle, star driven comedy and streaming action.
