Scam 2003: The Telgi Story Teaser: Hansal Mehta’s New Show Chronicles The Multi-Crore Fake Stamp Paper Racket

In 2020, Hansal Mehta came up with a web series that stormed Indian OTT viewers. It was the biographical drama Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story which chronicled the life of stockbroker Harshad Mehta. The series, based on a book by Sucheta Dalal, was a major success and boosted the subscription count of its streaming platform, SonyLiv. Three years later, Hansal is back with its spiritual sequel.

This time around, it’s called Scam 2003: The Telgi Story and it will tell the story of Abdul Karim Telgi who was a convicted counterfeiter. Yesterday, the makers dropped its intriguing teaser on the internet which has been loved by the viewers. The teaser opens with a voice-over from Manoj Bajpayee who mentions that this scam was of a whopping 30,000 crores. Throughout the teaser, we see glimpses of the back of Telgi as he is involved in his fake stamp paper racket.

Scam 2003: The Telgi Story is directed by Tushar Hiranandani. It stars Gagan Dev Riar as the titular character. The show is produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Studio Next. Scam 2003 will premiere on 2 September this year on SonyLiv.

Who Was Abdul Karim Telgi?

Born on 29 July 1961, Abdul Karim Telgi moved to Saudi Arabia for a job after completing his education. Seven years later he returned to India and started counterfeiting passports. Later on, he started faking stamp papers and hired around 300 people to sell them in bulk to banks, insurance firms, and stock brokerage firms. The racket got bigger over time and many police officers were found to be involved in it as well.

Its net worth went up to 30,000 crores. On 17 January 2006, Abdul and his associates were sentenced to 30 years of prison time and another 13 years in 2007 for a different scandal. On 23 October 2017, he passed away due to meningitis at the Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru. So far, there has been a film, and web series, and a documentary series on his life.
