Aamir Khan Denies 3 Idiots’ Phunsukh Wangdu Was Inspired By Sonam Wangchuk, Hopes Activist Ends Hunger Strike Soon

Aamir Khan has weighed in on Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike with a message of concern, but the actor also used the moment to settle a long-running 3 Idiots debate. As attention turned once again to the activist and innovator, Aamir made it clear that Phunsukh Wangdu, the much-loved character from the 2009 blockbuster, was not inspired by Wangchuk.

That clarification matters because the comparison has shadowed 3 Idiots for years. Wangchuk’s public image as an engineer, education reformer and innovator often led audiences to connect him with the film’s eccentric genius. Aamir, however, firmly pushed back on that reading while expressing hope for Wangchuk’s well-being.

This comment of Aamir Khan has also raised eyebrows because it was always considered that his character in 3 Idiots was inspired from Sonam Wangchuk.

Aamir Khan’S Clarification On Sonam Wangchuk

Speaking about Wangchuk’s fast, Aamir said, “I hope he ends his fast soon.” He also denied that Phunsukh Wangdu from 3 Idiots was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk.

The actor’s statement stands out because the resemblance between the real-life innovator and the fictional character has long been treated as accepted fact in pop culture conversations. With this response, Aamir has drawn a clean line between the film’s narrative and Wangchuk’s real journey.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots starred Aamir alongside R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani. The film became one of Hindi cinema’s defining blockbusters, and Phunsukh Wangdu emerged as one of its most memorable reveals. That image only deepened the public tendency to associate the role with Wangchuk.

Why The 3 Idiots Link Refuses To Fade

The association endured because Sonam Wangchuk’s work in education and innovation echoed traits that viewers admired in Phunsukh Wangdu. Over the years, that overlap helped turn a loose comparison into a widely repeated belief.

Aamir’s latest comment shifts the focus back to the present, where concern over Wangchuk’s health has become the immediate issue. His words were brief, but they carried two clear messages: support for Wangchuk’s recovery and a direct rejection of the idea that the 3 Idiots character was based on him.

Aamir Khan’S Recent And Upcoming Work

Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par in 2025. Before that, his major acting release was Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022. As a producer, he backed Laapataa Ladies in 2024, a Kiran Rao directorial that kept him firmly in the creative conversation during a relatively selective acting phase.

In 2026, Aamir’s banner backed Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos and Ek Din, both of which were released this year. He also has Batwara 1947 on his production slate, a confirmed upcoming film listed for 14th August 2026 release. The project stars Sunny Deol, Preity G Zinta and Shabana Azmi, and reflects Aamir’s continued balance between acting choices and ambitious production work.
