Aamir Khan has now put words to the emotional cost of failure. In a recent conversation with Zee Music Company, the superstar opened up about how deeply a film’s rejection affects him, as his production Ek Din, starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, failed to click at the box office.
Aamir Khan On Why Film Failure Hurts
Aamir said, “It breaks my heart when a film flops. At the end of the day, we make a film for our audience. When they buy a ticket and come to theaters to have a good time, and when they don’t like a film, then there is a flaw in your work; the audience never decides intentionally to go and watch a bad film. If they are disappointed, there is a mistake you have made.”
He added, “I go into depression for 2-3 months when a film doesn’t work, a film is like your child, when it doesn’t work or gets rejected, it is very painful. I feel it’s important to mourn your losses. When your film doesn’t work, it is like losing a child, so you should cry over it, give it time, so that it is out of your system and helps you move on.”
Aamir also spoke about trusting the first cut and reworking a film when it does not communicate as intended. He said, “Sometimes on a set you figure out a film is not going to work, it has happened very few times with me. When I see a film’s first cut, I never fool myself; I look at it objectively. If I don’t like it, there is something wrong with it.”
Junaid Khan On Ek Din And Aamir’S Response
Junaid, who starred in Ek Din, admitted the team had hoped for a better outcome. In an interview with Vickey Lalwani, he said, “We were hopeful. But I guess… It didn’t do well. It happens sometimes. It’s a film that I really liked, I really enjoyed. I think we all really liked and enjoyed it, and I guess… a lot of people did really like it, but I guess most people didn’t like it. That happens sometimes.”
On Aamir’s reaction, Junaid added, “He is still hopeful. Yeah, even after all these years, after seeing everything, it still really bothers him. But he keeps himself busy and gets back to it, and goes back out there and does it all over again.”
Ek Din was directed by Sunil Pandey and produced by Mansoor Khan, Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under Aamir Khan Productions. Released on May 1, 2026, the romantic drama followed a man who gets one day with the colleague he secretly loves. Film failed miserably as it failed to cross 7 crore nett India lifetime number.
Aamir Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Aamir’s recent phase has been shaped by selective acting and hands-on production. After Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022, he produced Laapataa Ladies in 2024 and starred in Sitaare Zameen Par in 2025. In 2026, Aamir Khan Productions backed Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos and Ek Din, while Lahore 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starring Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi and Preity Zinta, is confirmed for theatrical release in August 2026.
