Aamir Khan is one of Bollywood’s biggest global stars, but his rise in China happened unexpectedly through piracy. The actor recently shared that his 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots became a huge success in China, not through an official release, but because of illegal downloads.
How 3 Idiots Became A Hit In China
Unlike its planned release in India, 3 Idiots reached Chinese audiences through unofficial channels. Once people started watching it, the film spread like wildfire. Its emotional story and relatable themes connected deeply with viewers. Before Aamir’s movies were officially released in China, he had already become a well-known name.
Speaking at ABP Network’s Ideas of India 2025, Aamir talked about this surprising journey. He said, “Piracy made me a star in China. 3 Idiots went viral there because of piracy. The credit goes to the Chinese audience for accepting a film from a different culture and giving it love and respect. It was all organic and I had no role to play in it.”
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots starred Aamir alongside R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani. The film, known for its take on education and societal pressure, became one of Bollywood’s most successful movies.
After 3 Idiots, Aamir’s fame in China kept growing. His films PK, Dangal, and Secret Superstar became massive hits. Dangal alone made over Rs 1,200 crore at the Chinese box office. His storytelling and social messages struck a chord with the audience. Today, Chinese fans lovingly call him “Uncle Aamir.”
Aamir Khan: Work Front
Aamir is currently working on Sitaare Zameen Par, where he reunites with Darsheel Safary. Directed by R.S. Prasanna, it is a remake of the Spanish film Champions and will be released in December 2025.
He is also producing Lahore 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The film stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, and other major actors in important roles.
