Aamir Khan has finally opened up about the much discussed delay surrounding the proposed biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, a project that has been in development for a couple of years and is being helmed by filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani. The film has generated considerable curiosity, given the subject and the successful creative partnership between Aamir and Hirani in the past. However, despite the excitement, the project is yet to move into production. It was supposed to go on floors in March this year, however the plans seem to push ahead.
The actor recently addressed the status of the film during an interaction with The Times of India, where he spoke candidly about the progress of the script and why the film has not materialised yet. Aamir made it clear that while the idea deeply interests him, the script is still a work in progress and the final decision rests entirely with the director.
Aamir Khan on script for Dadasaheb Phalke
Speaking about the legendary filmmaker and the biopic, Aamir Khan said, “I have immense respect for Dadasaheb Phalke. I do know some of his life because of the research that Raju has done, and he has told me about it. I’m not sure if the script has been fully cracked yet, as he’s still working on it. Ultimately, it all depends on how the final script shapes up, so I’m waiting for Raju to take that call. He’s a great person to work with.”
The statement marks one of the most direct acknowledgements from Aamir regarding the project’s current status.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic Script Lacked Humour
The Dadasaheb Phalke biopic has been discussed in industry circles for a long time, primarily because it would reunite Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani after their iconic collaborations. There were reports earlier that Aamir Khan felt the script was too dry for audiences in today’s world. The biopic reportedly lacked the humor and entertainment quotient that fans expect from an Aamir Rajkumar Hirani collaboration. Despite being historically significant, the narrative failed to strike the right balance between educational content and engaging storytelling. After repeated sessions of rewriting, the duo collectively decided that forcing the project into production would not do justice to the legendary filmmaker Dadasaheb Phalke. They believe that a personality as iconic as him deserves a script that is both emotionally stirring and universally engaging.
However, Hirani is known for taking his time to perfect scripts, often spending years in development before locking a final draft. Aamir’s statement reinforces this reputation, highlighting that the director is still shaping the narrative.
If the film eventually goes on floors, it will mark Aamir Khan’s third collaboration with Rajkumar Hirani after 3 Idiots released in 2009 and PK released in 2014. Both films remain among the most successful and influential Hindi films of their time, making expectations around this potential reunion extremely high.

For now, the actor has made it clear that the decision lies solely with the filmmaker, and that he is patiently waiting for the script to reach a stage that satisfies Hirani’s creative vision.
