Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is known for his impeccable script choices and transformative performances, but like every actor, he has had his share of films that slipped through his hands. In a recent interaction, the actor was asked about the films he regrets turning down. While he admitted to giving up Darr (1993), he made it clear that there are no regrets, as he believes Shah Rukh Khan was the perfect choice for the role.
A Role That Became Iconic
Directed by Yash Chopra, Darr remains one of the most memorable thrillers in Bollywood history. The film, which saw Shah Rukh Khan as the obsessive lover Rahul, became a game-changer for his career, solidifying his image as Bollywood’s king of intense performances. Aamir Khan was initially approached for the role, but things didn’t work out, paving the way for Shah Rukh to make the part his own.
Aamir Khan said, “I gave up #Darr but does not regret it as he feels that Shah Rukh Khan perfectly suited that role.”
Aamir Khan’s Take on Missing Out on Darr
While many actors might express regret over letting go of a film that went on to become a cult classic, Aamir Khan sees it differently. He acknowledged that though he was once attached to Darr, he believes Shah Rukh Khan brought something special to the role that no one else could have. His nuanced performance as Rahul, coupled with the iconic “I love you, K-K-K-Kiran” dialogue, made Darr a timeless hit.
A Case of Destiny?
Bollywood has seen many instances where films were originally meant for one actor but ended up making another a superstar. Darr is one such case, where Aamir stepping away allowed Shah Rukh to shine in a role that would define his career in the ’90s.
Aamir Khan’s career, of course, took its own legendary path, with films like Rangeela, Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, and PK cementing his place as a thinking actor. Looking back, it’s clear that both Aamir and Shah Rukh made the right choices, shaping their careers in distinct but equally impactful ways.
Would Darr have been the same with Aamir Khan? We’ll never know—but what’s certain is that some roles are simply meant to be, and for Darr, Shah Rukh Khan was destiny’s pick.
