Aamir Khan has always been known for his unique approach to filmmaking. Not only does he experiment with stories, but he also follows a different business model.
The superstar recently spoke about why he prefers a profit-sharing model instead of charging a fixed salary. At an ABP Live event, he explained how this method helps him support the industry while making sure his earnings depend on a film’s success.
Aamir Khan On Following Profit-Sharing Model
Aamir has been following this model for over 20 years. He compared it to how artists used to earn in the past. “Since I earn money in the profit-share model, it is almost like the old way of artists earning money. They would perform on the roads and collect money from the onlookers by going around with an upturned hat. If they like it, they can give whatever they deem fit, and if they don’t like it, they can walk away. Similarly, if my film runs, I earn, and if the film doesn’t run, I don’t earn,” he shared.
The actor believes this system keeps him connected to the audience. “I don’t take a salary,” he stated. He made it clear that his earnings only come from the film’s performance.
Actor On How Positive Reception Can Boost Film’s Success
Aamir used 3 Idiots as an example to explain how word-of-mouth can boost a film’s success. “So many of you saw the film, recommended it to your friends and family, rewatched it, and ensured the film earned a lot of money. So, I too got a share from those profits. Basically, my earnings are solely dependent on the film getting appreciated and finding its audience,” he said.
He also spoke about his passion for meaningful cinema. He recalled how some people questioned whether a film about dyslexia like Taare Zameen Par would work.
“But I liked it a lot, and I cried a lot too. I wanted to make this film. What really works in my favour is that I don’t load my fees on the film’s budget. See, my films can get done in Rs 10-20 crores, and that much money my films would make anyway,” he added.
Aamir’s approach has not only made him a successful actor but also a game-changer in the industry. His belief in storytelling over money has kept him relevant for decades.
