In a potentially game-changing shift for Bollywood’s post-theatrical digital strategy, Aamir Khan is officially considering a Pay-Per-View (PPV) release for his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par through YouTube. According to sources in the trade, the film may go PPV approximately eight weeks after it premieres in theatres on June 20, 2025, jumping past the traditional OTT route.
Aamir Khan’s Digital Strategy: A Disruptive Alternative To The OTT Paradigm
Aamir Khan, never one to shy away from telling progressive stories and making provocative business decisions, is exploring an innovative pay-per-view (PPV) model by YouTube to potentially distribute his film Sitaare Zameen Par directly to the consumer. If launched, audiences will only pay for the film once, with no need for a monthly OTT subscription.
A source close to the film’s development said,
“Aamir has always embraced innovation—not only of content but in the ways that films reach audiences. He wants Sitaare Zameen Par to be accessible, without tying consumers to a platform that they may not have or subscribe to. This is potentially a game-changer.”
The YouTube PPV model allows for more control from content creators, eliminates traditional gatekeepers, and impedes revenue margins—especially for independent filmmakers that value creative independence (and, of course, financial independence).
What We Know About Sitaare Zameen Par So Far
Directed by R.S. Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par is being branded as a spiritual sequel to Khan’s Taare Zameen Par (2007), but it is covering completely different ground. While Taare Zameen Par focused on dyslexia and the emotional aspect of children’s basic world, the upcoming feature delves into themes of mental health, behavioural change, and inclusivity — through Khan’s role as a flawed and temperamental coach whose life is transformed through a group of specially-abled children.
Starring Genelia Deshmukh and Darsheel Safary alongside Khan, Sitaare Zameen Par is set to be released theatrically on June 20, 2025.
BoxOfficeWorldwide Verdict:
If Aamir Khan pulls off Sitaare Zameen Par on YouTube PPV after a theatrical run, it could shift the way Bollywood films are marketed and monetised digitally. It represents his unrelenting audience-first cinema institutions, creative ownership, and technological disruption. With a June theatrical release in everyone’s sights, it is possible this release experiment may establish a template for direct-to-consumer in the future.
