The family of the iconic cartoonist late RK Laxman has decided to honor his glorious legacy by instituting the first ever RK Laxman Award for Excellence, and the inaugural recipient is none other than Aamir Khan.
The prestigious award will be presented to the superstar during a spectacular AR Rahman live music concert on November 23, 2025. The event is scheduled to take place at the MCA Cricket Stadium in Pune, commencing at 5 pm. This special evening will not only celebrate the maestro’s music but also pay tribute to one of India’s most beloved cartoonists.

Usha Lakshman, the daughter in law of the late cartoonist, shared the exciting news in a recent interview. She revealed that the RK Laxman family has organized this AR Rahman concert as a platform to celebrate the cartoonist’s enduring legacy. The decision to honor Aamir Khan with the first ever RK Laxman Award for Excellence represents the biggest tribute the family could offer to Laxman’s memory.
This award recognizes excellence in the field of entertainment and arts, values that both RK Laxman and Aamir Khan have championed throughout their illustrious careers. The choice of Aamir Khan as the first recipient speaks volumes about his contributions to Indian cinema and his dedication to meaningful storytelling.
Who Was RK Laxman
RK Laxman was a celebrated Indian cartoonist and illustrator who left an indelible mark on Indian journalism and popular culture. He was best known for creating The Common Man, a character that became synonymous with the everyday struggles and observations of ordinary Indians. His daily cartoon strip You Said It entertained and enlightened readers for decades.
Beyond cartoons, Laxman also contributed to Indian television by creating sketches for the adaptation of Malgudi Days. The beloved show was written by his elder brother, the legendary author RK Narayan, and directed by Shankar Nag. Laxman passed away in Pune’s Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in 2015 at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists across generations.
RK Laxman’s Illustrious Recognition
During his lifetime, RK Laxman received numerous prestigious honors. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 1973, recognizing his exceptional contribution to Indian art and culture. Three decades later, in 2005, he was honored with the even more prestigious Padma Vibhushan. In 2004, the University of Mysore conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate, acknowledging his immense impact on Indian society through his art.
Interestingly, despite his splendid talent and eventual recognition, RK Laxman was once rejected by the prestigious Sir JJ Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai. This rejection did not deter him from pursuing his passion, and he went on to become one of India’s most celebrated cartoonists.
