Hashtags such as #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha, #BoycottAamirKhan and #BoycottBollywood have been doing the rounds on social media for quite some time. Since this is Mr. Perfectionist of the Indian film industry’s first movie (Laal Singh Chaddha) following the 2018 flop “Thugs of Hindostan,” and it is scheduled for a big release on August 11, the latest social media trends have Aamir Khan concerned.
Khan’s remarks from a 2015 incident regarding “intolerance” in India are the cause of the backlash his next movie is receiving on social media. Khan had expressed alarm at the time over a number of instances of increasing “intolerance” in India.
In his controversial statement seven years ago, Khan had said, “Our country is very tolerant, but there are people who spread ill-will”. His then-wife Kiran Rao also made headlines for saying that she considered leaving the country for the safety of their children.
Aamir Khan, who quit social media last year, spoke to media, where he said he loves India and requested fans to not think otherwise.
“Yes, I feel sad. Also, I feel sad that some of the people who are saying this, in their hearts, they believe that I am someone who doesn’t like India. In their hearts, they believe, but it is untrue. I really love the country… That’s how I am. It is rather unfortunate that some people feel that way,” he was quoted as saying.
The actor urged his fans to not boycott his film and said he ‘loves’ India. “Please don’t boycott my film. Please watch my film,” he said.
‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is the official Hindi remake of the Hollywood 1994 classic ‘Forrest Gump’, starring Tom Hanks. It also stars Kareena Kapoor in a pivotal role.
