After Poor Start, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Collects 11.25 Cr In India And $129 M Worldwide In Its 1st Weekend, Needs BIG Boost To Break Record Of $475 Made By Its Predecessors

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes grossed $129 million in its debut weekend, surpassing expectations. Concerns about its box office longevity linger due to low ratings in the US and China.

The latest instalment in the Planet Of The Apes saga, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, has exceeded industry expectations, grossing approximately $129 million in its debut weekend.

Despite initial concerns about its performance due to a poor opening, the film has secured the second-largest opening weekend for the franchise domestically, excluding inflation adjustments. Notably, it has emerged as the franchise’s biggest opener in several international markets, including India.

While Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes has kicked off on a strong note, concerns linger regarding its longevity at the box office.

The film’s low Cinema Score—a metric for movie ratings in the US—poses a potential challenge to its sustained performance. Similarly, lukewarm ratings on Maoyan and Douban in China could impact its overall box office trajectory.

India Collection & Box Office Expectations Of The Film

With a domestic debut of $57 million, industry insiders anticipate Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes to achieve a final gross of at least $140-150 million. In China, where market unpredictability prevails, reaching $25 million would be considered a commendable feat.

Meanwhile, in India, the film posted double-digit first-weekend earnings of approximately Rs 11.25 crores, positioning it as the franchise’s highest-grossing film in the country by Monday’s end.

Comparison Of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes To Predecessors

The last three Planet Of The Apes films collectively garnered over $475 million worldwide. However, given the challenges posed by the Chinese market, achieving similar figures for Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes may prove daunting.

Nevertheless, breaking into the $400 million worldwide club would mark a significant milestone for the film, considering its production budget of around $160 million—a crucial benchmark for theatrical breakeven.

Additionally, leveraging its association with the Planet Of The Apes IP is expected to yield substantial gains from non-theatrical revenue streams.
