GR Gopinath Draws Parallels Between ‘Sarfira’ Trailer Hype and Air Deccan’s Iconic Launch
Recently, a conversation on Twitter between Akshay Kumar and aviation pioneer GR Gopinath added an additional element of excitement to the film’s promotional campaign.
Akshay Kumar shared the trailer on social media and expressed profound sentiments about chasing dreams. He wrote, “Sapne woh nahi jo aap sote huye dekhte hain, sapne woh hote hain jo aapko sone hi nahi dete. Ek aise hi sapne ki kahani hai Sarfira.”
GR Gopinath drew a noteworthy comparison between the buzz surrounding Sarfira‘s trailer launch and the pioneering days of Air Deccan.
Reflecting on the overwhelming response, Gopinath reacted, “The euphoria for the launch trailer of Sarfira and the overwhelming viewership and buzz it has generated reminds me of Air Deccan’s launch with its 1 rupee tickets when the website collapsed and people thought I was crazy. I was!”

Who Is Captain GR Gopinath?
GR Gopinath, born on November 13, 1951, into a Tamil family in Karnataka, embarked on a remarkable journey that began with his enrolment in the National Defence Academy (NDA) and later, the Indian Military Academy. After serving in the Indian Army for eight years and participating in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, he retired early as a Captain at the age of 28.
Following his military career, Gopinath ventured into various businesses including dairy farming, hospitality, motorcycle dealership, and stockbroking before finding his true calling in aviation. In 1997, he founded Deccan Aviation, offering chartered helicopter services for VIPs, laying the groundwork for his future endeavours.
Inspired by a vision to democratise air travel in India, Gopinath faced numerous obstacles before finally launching Air Deccan in 2003. As India’s first low-cost airline, Air Deccan revolutionised the aviation industry by offering affordable airfares that made flying accessible to millions. At its peak, the airline operated 350 daily flights to 60 destinations, garnering substantial market share and acclaim.
However, challenges and financial pressures led Gopinath to sell Air Deccan in 2007 to Vijay Mallya, who integrated it with Kingfisher Airlines. Gopinath later chronicled his entrepreneurial journey in the memoir Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey, which inspired the acclaimed Tamil film Soorarai Pottru and its Hindi remake, Sarfira.
About Sarfira
Sarfira, a remake of Soorarai Pottru, revolves around the life of Maara, inspired by GR Gopinath’s experiences. Besides Akshay Kumar, the film features Radhikka Madan, Paresh Rawal, Seema Biswas, Anil Charanjeett, and Prakash Belawadi in pivotal roles.
Sudha Kongara, who directed the original Tamil film, also helmed the Hindi remake. Sarfira is slated for a global theatrical release on July 12.
