Ahead of Karan Arjun Re-Release, Rakesh Roshan Reveals Producers Earn Less As Multiplexes Take 65-70% Share, Questions Ticket Pricing

Rakesh Roshan revealing that producers earn less due to multiplexes taking a 65-70% share. He also questions their ticket pricing strategy.

The iconic Karan Arjun (1995) is making a comeback to the big screen this November 22, and fans are already buzzing with excitement. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, the film, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, will have the largest re-release ever for a Hindi film.

During his recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Rakesh Roshan shared some shocking insights about the upcoming re-release.

Rakesh Roshan Expects Karan Arjun To Re-Release Around 1800 Screens, Questions Ticket Pricing

The movie will be shown on a massive 1,800 screens worldwide, with around 1,100 to 1,200 screens in India and another 500 to 600 overseas. However, Rakesh Roshan added that if demand is high after the initial days, they could increase the number of prints. “We’ll wait until Monday, November 25 to see if there’s a demand from exhibitors. If that happens, we’ll increase the prints,” he said.

This marks an exciting period for the film industry, with several movies being re-released in recent months, including Rockstar, Laila Majnu, and Tumbbad

A key feature of these re-releases was the affordable ticket pricing—usually capped at Rs. 149. Rakesh confirmed that Karan Arjun would follow the same pricing strategy.

“It should be like that for re-releases. Actually, such rates should be there for all films. I wonder why multiplexes are not realising (that lower ticket prices will attract more people),” he remarked.

He pointed out the potential for higher audience turnout with more reasonable ticket prices.

Filmmaker Claims Producers Earn Less As Multiplexes Take Large Shares

Rakesh Roshan revealed that the financial dynamics of re-releases are challenging for producers. Typically, theatres charge a Virtual Print Fee (VPF) of around Rs. 20,000, but this fee is exempted for re-releases. However, the catch is that multiplexes demand a larger share of the earnings.

“Usually, they give the producers 52% in the first week. But with re-releases, they take 65-70% share. Hence, producers don’t earn much. It’s done by the makers just for reputation and satisfaction,” he explained.

Despite the reduced profits, Rakesh sees the re-release as a test for the enduring power of Karan Arjun in today’s world.

“With Karan Arjun’s re-release, I also want to see if a 30-year-old film still casts the same magic on the moviegoers. If yes, then it proves that such films still work. If not, then maybe the generation has changed,” he said. He added that it’s a “testing period” not just for him, but for every filmmaker.

The re-release holds huge value for Rakesh Roshan’s family, too. His son, Hrithik Roshan, who assisted on the film, has lent his voice to the re-release trailer. Hrithik shared his excitement for the film’s return, posting a heartfelt message on social media alongside the film’s trailer.
