Ajay Devgn is heading back to a space that has already delivered one of the biggest milestones of his recent career. Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that Devgn and director Om Raut are in talks to reunite for a new historical film based on another unsung Maratha warrior, extending the creative lane they first explored with Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.
The development places the actor and filmmaker back in a storytelling zone where conviction, scale and cultural memory intersect. The new project is being conceived as a period epic, with early conversations already focused on production design, budget and the larger cinematic treatment needed to bring the warrior’s story to the screen.
The Latest Update
The film is currently in development, with Devgn closely involved in shaping the project at an early stage. The core idea is to spotlight a lesser-known Maratha hero, continuing the broader spirit of Tanhaji while telling a distinct story. NY VFXWaala is understood to be working on the visual planning, indicating that the makers are laying technical groundwork well before cameras roll.
That approach carries added weight because Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior remains a major benchmark in both Devgn and Raut’s filmographies. Released in 2020, the period action drama starred Devgn in the title role alongside Saif Ali Khan, Kajol and Sharad Kelkar, and chronicled the life of Tanaji Malusare. According to Bollywood Hungama’s box office data, the film earned Rs. 279.55 crore net in India and Rs. 367.65 crore worldwide.
For Devgn, the timing of this reunion is especially notable. He is in a phase where audiences are watching him move between established franchises, intense dramatic material and mainstream theatrical entertainers, making a return to historical action feel less like a nostalgic callback and more like a strategic next step.
Why This Reunion Fits Ajay Devgn’s Big Screen Phase
Over the past few years, Devgn has maintained a wide theatrical range while staying firmly positioned as a big-screen star. In 2023, he directed and starred in Bholaa. In 2024, he led Shaitaan, the supernatural thriller co-starring R. Madhavan, Jyothika and Janki Bodiwala, which emerged as a hit and grossed over Rs. 211 crore worldwide. He also starred in Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, directed by Neeraj Pandey and co-starring Tabu, before reprising Bajirao Singham in Singham Again in 2024.
That current career momentum makes the Om Raut collaboration stand out even more. Devgn’s confirmed theatrical lineup includes Raid 2, scheduled for May 1, 2025, Son of Sardaar 2, slated for August 1, 2025, and De De Pyaar De 2, listed for November 14, 2025. Seen against that slate, this new Maratha warrior film adds another high-value title, one that taps into a genre where Devgn has already delivered both emotional resonance and box office scale.
