Rajkummar Rao Begins Dada Shoot, First Glimpse From Sourav Ganguly Biopic Is Out

Rajkummar Rao has officially stepped into one of Indian sport’s most magnetic roles. With the first glimpse from the muhurat ceremony of Dada now out, the Sourav Ganguly biopic has moved from long-running speculation to an active film set, and that first image has instantly sharpened attention on how one of cricket’s most commanding personalities will be translated for the screen.

The first visual cue came through director Vikramaditya Motwane, who marked the beginning of the journey with a post tied to Kolkata’s cricketing identity. Rao then followed with photos from the ceremonial launch and a caption that said exactly what fans had been waiting to hear: “And it begins… the one and only Dada.” For a project built around a figure as iconic and emotionally charged as Ganguly, that brief post carried the impact of a full-scale reveal.

A High Stakes Start For Dada

The film is titled Dada: The Sourav Ganguly Story and reunites Rao with Motwane after Trapped, their acclaimed 2017 collaboration. Produced by Luv Films, the biopic also has cinematographer Siddharth Diwan on board, giving the project a creative line-up associated with sharp visual storytelling and strong dramatic mood.

What stands out about this launch is its restraint. Beyond the title, director, production banner, and Rao’s casting, the makers have not rushed to unveil more. That measured approach works in the film’s favour because Ganguly’s life already comes with scale, conflict, and enormous recall. His journey from elegant left-hander to transformational India captain remains one of the most cinematic arcs in modern Indian sport.

That is also why Dada arrives with built-in dramatic power. Ganguly was not simply a cricket star with landmark wins attached to his name. He became the face of a harder, more self-assured Indian team, and his public image was shaped by defiance, theatre, and unmistakable swagger. Those qualities give the biopic a rich emotional centre from the outset.

Why Rajkummar Rao Faces One Of His Most Demanding Roles Yet

Rao’s casting lands at an especially interesting point in his career. Over the last few years, he has moved with ease between intimate character studies and broader commercial entertainers, building a screen presence that feels both accessible and intensely controlled. In 2024 alone, he headlined Srikanth, appeared in Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, and returned as Vicky in Stree 2, one of the year’s biggest theatrical successes.

That recent run matters because Ganguly is not a role that can survive on imitation alone. The part demands authority, instinct, and the ability to channel a public figure whose body language was as memorable as his achievements. Rao has increasingly shown that he can hold emotional precision and mainstream charisma in the same performance, which makes this casting feel less like a surprise and more like a calculated creative move.

His recent choices have also underlined a willingness to take on real-life and strongly defined personalities without flattening them into mannerisms. That instinct should serve Dada well, because Ganguly’s story is not just about cricketing milestones. It is about attitude, leadership, and a persona that changed how Indian cricket carried itself. For Rao, this biopic now stands as one of the most closely watched acting challenges of his current phase.
