Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 Breaks Hindi Records By Exceeding Rs 700 Cr Mark BUT Is It Facing Loss In Telugu, TN And Kerala Markets?

Pushpa 2 is a box office hit in Hindi but is struggling in Telugu and other southern markets. Read to know more!

Allu Arjun‘s Pushpa 2: The Rule is dominating the box office, particularly in Hindi markets. Directed by Sukumar, the film has raked in an impressive Rs 770 crore in Hindi alone and is now on track to hit Rs 800 crore. This is a huge success, with Pushpa 2 even outgrossing newer Hindi releases like Baby John, which made far less on its opening day than Pushpa 2 did on its 21st day.

However, the film is facing struggles in its home market, the Telugu states. Reports suggest that Pushpa 2 may end up losing money in these regions. By December 29, 2024, theatres in Telugu states were seeing empty seats, prompting exhibitors to pull the film in favour of upcoming Sankranti releases.

Pushpa 2 To Face Loss In Telugu Market

According to Telugu Cinema, nearly all distributors in Andhra Pradesh are expected to face losses from Pushpa 2. The only region where distributors are making money is Rayalaseema.

In the Nizam region, the film is expected to break even, but only if distributors receive a GST refund from the producers. Luckily, the producers have stakes in the Nizam region, so they won’t bear significant losses.

This isn’t the first time the Pushpa franchise has faced this issue. The first film, Pushpa: The Rise, which earned over Rs 100 crore in Hindi in 2021, also struggled in the Telugu market. The makers had to return money to distributors to make it profitable. Despite a strong fanbase in Telugu-speaking regions, Pushpa 2 seems to be following the same pattern.

Currently, Pushpa 2 has grossed about Rs 325 crore in Telugu states, making it the second-highest grosser behind RRR (Rs 396 crore). Despite massive success in Hindi, the film’s underperformance in Telugu markets highlights a recurring challenge for regional films trying to conquer both local and national audiences.

Tamil Nadu & Kerala Region Also Suffer

The situation in almost all the southern states has been disappointing for Pushpa 2. While Andhra Pradesh is struggling, the overall south market isn’t performing well compared to the north.

The Malayalam market has been a complete disaster, and Tamil Nadu has only managed to recover around 80% of its investment. In contrast, the north has seen record-breaking collections everywhere, with Pushpa mania outshining every Bollywood release.

While Pushpa 2 continues to soar in Hindi, its performance in its home market remains a major concern.
