Alia Bhatt’s entry into the YRF Spy Universe is taking a sharper, darker route. With Alpha, the actor moves into a harder action space, while the latest character update positions her as anything but a conventional saviour.
Headlined by Alia and Sharvari, Alpha is a key 2026 big-screen title from Yash Raj Films. Directed by Shiv Rawail, the action entertainer also features Bobby Deol as the antagonist, with Anil Kapoor in a pivotal role.
Alia Bhatt’S Alpha Character Takes A Darker Turn
A production source has indicated that Alia’s character in Alpha is not a traditional spy. “Alia Bhatt is definitely playing a killer in Alpha.”
The source further described the character’s tonality, saying, “She isn’t like the goody good heroes that the YRF Spy Universe has introduced so far and is, in fact, as assassin who has been raised and trained to kill. She isn’t a spy. She is an alpha killer,”
That distinction sits at the centre of the film’s creative approach. As per the source, YRF head Aditya Chopra wanted to create a protagonist “who shouldn’t be judged for her actions but should be seen as someone who will do as she pleases.”
The source added, “This is a very today’s way of looking at protagonists because people want to see exciting, entertaining protagonists on screen. Alia’s character in Alpha will do just that!”
The studio’s official position remains guarded for now. A YRF spokesperson said, “All we can say is that everyone should wait for the first asset of Alpha. We can neither confirm or deny this chatter at this stage,”
What Alpha Brings To The Yrf Spy Universe
Alpha marks Alia’s first film with Yash Raj Films and is being mounted as India’s first female-led action film in this universe. Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film will arrive in cinemas on July 3, 2026.
The source also said, “With Alpha, Aditya Chopra is taking a very unconventional approach to build a hero. This is clearly a creative pivot for the YRF Spyverse and a much-needed one for the universe that wants to score big with Alpha as it puts a leading lady doing hardcore action in an action entertainer entirely mounted on her,”
With Sharvari joining Alia at the centre of the narrative, Alpha is designed to expand the franchise’s template beyond its earlier male-led chapters.
Alia Bhatt’S Recent And Upcoming Work
Alia was last seen in the 2024 action thriller Jigra, which she also co-produced. Before that, she appeared in Netflix’s 2023 spy action film Heart of Stone with Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, marking her Hollywood debut. In the same year, she starred opposite Ranveer Singh in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, a major theatrical success.
After Alpha, Alia has Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, lined up for a confirmed 2027 release.
