Ameesha Patel Opens Up: Karan Johar’s Candid Conversation About Bipasha Basu And Lara Dutta’s Remarks At Vaada Premiere

This year, Ameesha Patel is making a comeback to her famous role as Sakeena in the sequel to the hugely successful patriotic-romantic film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Alongside Sunny Deol, the actress is preparing for her return. During a recent interview, Ameesha reminisced about her early days in the Bollywood industry and discussed a past feud that escalated into a heated argument involving Bipasha Basu in the movie Jism. The controversy gained momentum when Basu and Lara Dutta appeared on the popular show Koffee With Karan, where they responded to Ameesha’s remarks. In an exclusive interview, Ameesha addressed this long-standing controversy that began nearly two decades ago.

In case you’re not familiar with the details, Ameesha Patel made a remark about the movie Jism, expressing that her grandmother would have disapproved of her participation in such a film. Jism was known for its adult romantic storyline, featuring Bipasha Basu in a bold role. During her appearance on Koffee With Karan, Bipasha responded to Ameesha’s comment by suggesting that Ameesha wouldn’t have been capable of portraying a character like that due to her petite stature. Basu emphasized that the role required a strong female personality to successfully tackle such a challenging character. Meanwhile, Lara Dutta took a different stance and stated that Ameesha was already dealing with enough in her own life, making it unnecessary to dwell on or discuss with others.

During the interview, Ameesha Patel recounted the origins of the feud by stating, “Lara and Bipasha appeared on Koffee with Karan and apparently made some less-than-flattering comments about me. I’m not sure why, considering I had toured the world with Bipasha and we had a good relationship. I also worked with Lara on the film Elaan and maintained a polite attitude towards her throughout the shooting.” Ameesha further explained, “Arjun and I were scheduled to appear on Koffee with Karan in a few days to discuss our movie Vaada and other topics. However, the show didn’t happen as Arjun fell ill with typhoid. He was too unwell, and as a result, we couldn’t make it to the show.”

She revealed that after the episode featuring Bipasha Basu and Lara Dutta aired, Karan Johar approached her at the premiere of her film Vaada (2005). Ameesha shared, “Karan came up to me in his signature Karan style and said, ‘So Ameesha, you know what Bipasha and Lara said about you on the show. What will you say when you come on the show next week?’ I responded, ‘Nothing. I have nothing to say. I’ll simply give a ‘no comment.’ Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I choose not to engage.’ Karan remarked, ‘Oh, that’s your typical polished South Bombay manners.’ I replied, ‘Yes, that’s who I am.'”

Ameesha Patel’s Comments

Ameesha Patel further clarified her previous comments by stating, “I still stand by my statement. I don’t consider Basic Instinct to be a bad film. In fact, I admire Sharon Stone and consider her to be a goddess with immense talent. I also believe that Jism was a fantastic movie, featuring excellent performances and a remarkable soundtrack. However, what I meant was that I am not comfortable portraying a character like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. It takes a lot of courage to be bold and daring on screen. While I may be acknowledged as sexy and attractive in terms of physical appearance, I personally do not feel at ease with that level of boldness and exposure.
