Actor Akshay Kumar has recently faced backlash for his frequent film releases, with critics suggesting he should be more selective. Despite the string of flops, Kumar stands by his decision to work on multiple projects each year.
During his recent chat with Baradwaj Rangan on Galatta Plus, Kumar addressed these concerns, revealing advice he received from the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, who himself has faced career setbacks.
Akshay Kumar Says THIS On Doing Multiple Films In An Year
Kumar, known for delivering three to four movies annually, stated that even if he reduces his output, there is no guarantee of success. “If I do only two films a year, there’s no assurance they’ll be hits,” he said, dismissing the notion that overexposure is the cause of his recent failures.
He also mentioned that he cannot impose himself on filmmakers and producers for longer than necessary. For instance, he spent only 12 days on OMG 2, where he played a supporting role, and 45 days on the upcoming Jolly LLB 3. He worked on the recent flop Bade Miyan Chote Miyan for 80 days, only to see it fail commercially. Reflecting on this, he remarked, “Kya ukhaad liya (What difference did it make)?”
Actor Claims Some People Celebrate His Failure, Reveals One Advise Big B Gave Him
Kumar shared his perspective on the industry’s dynamics, noting that selective work doesn’t always equate to success. “I’ve seen people who work selectively, and their films flop as well. In our industry, people stop offering you work if you deliver flops,” he explained.
Recalling Amitabh Bachchan’s advice, he said, “Mr Bachchan told me, ‘Akshay, kaam karte rehna beta. Kaam ko mat chhorna (Akshay, don’t turn down work).’ I learned this from him… Calculation is wrong, manipulation is wrong. Honesty is right, creativity is right. Believing in your luck is right.”
In the same interview, Kumar also talked about the industry’s politics and how some individuals celebrate his downfall. While he refrained from naming anyone, he expressed his disgust at the negativity and stated that he isn’t a ‘racehorse’.
Since the pandemic, Kumar has had only two clear hits: OMG 2, where he wasn’t the lead, and Sooryavanshi, which featured multiple stars and a renowned director.
His recent flops include Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Raksha Bandhan, Ram Setu, Samrat Prithviraj, Selfiee, and Bachchhan Paandey. Currently, he is appearing in his latest release Sarfira, a remake of the Tamil film Soorarai Pottru. The film released in theatres today and can be watched in nearby cinema halls.
