Amol Palekar was a household name back in the late 1970s and 1980s. He has acted in several comedy classics like Choti Si Baat, Golmal, and Rajnigandha among others. He has also directed a variety of films in his long and successful career. One of them was the 2005 fantasy flick Paheli, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji. The film was a moderate success at the box office. SRK also produced the film with Aziz Mirza and Juhi Chawla. It was also India’s official entry for the 79th Academy Award.
Recently, Palekar unveiled how SRK reacted to the narration of the script. The director said that he had started the pre-production of the film and was thinking of casting newcomers for the lead. That is when someone from his team suggested Shah Rukh’s name. The script was narrated to SRK by the film’s writer, Sandhya Gokhale.
Right after the narration was over, the King of Romance lit a cigarette and ask the two if he could come on board as a producer as well. Palekar recalls SRK asking, “Sir, would you mind if I produce this film?” Palekar quickly agreed and said that things became easy afterward for the project.
Some Details About Paheli
Shah Rukh also had one request for Palekar. He asked the film to be shot from start to end in one single schedule. Although that was not the norm in the early 2000s, Palekar agreed to that. He says that SRK made everything easy for the film, from the actor’s dates to other logistical issues. SRK also made sure all the actors Palekar wanted to cast would agree to come on board. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Juhi Chawla, Suniel Shetty, and Amitabh Bachchan in pivotal roles. It was an official remake of Mani Kaul’s 1973 drama film titled Duvidha.
