Anushka Sharma’s long-awaited comeback vehicle Chakda ‘Xpress is back in the headlines—but not for all the right reasons. The sports biopic based on the incredible journey of former Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami was poised to release on Netflix in October 2023. Now, it is in limbo with no release date in sight. And Jhulan has finally broken her silence—only to reveal she too is as much in the dark as everyone else.

In a recent interview, the celebrated cricketer was asked about the film’s status. Her candid response was revealing:
“Mereko aisa koi news nahi hai aur call mujhe kar rahe sab.”
Clearly showing that the delay itself is not just conjecture in the industry—it is very serious and very open-ended. Jhulan did not go any further in her comments, alluding that it is out of her hands.
So What Went Wrong With Chakda ‘Xpress?
Chakda ‘Xpress, directed by Prosit Roy and written by Abhishek Banerjee, was to be more than just another sports biopic. With Anushka Sharma as the first lady of Indian cricket alongside Jhulan, it was planned to be like none before it. And, after a full seven-month training camp following a maternity break, it seemed like Anushka was more committed to the cricket story than any other cast member.
Unfortunately, the reality seems to be reality! According to a report, Chakda ‘Xpress had a bumpy start when streaming partner Netflix and producing house Clean Slate Filmz separated at what was supposed to be their scheduled festival premiere.
Reportedly, there were budget differences, and Netflix took a heat check at that festival, which led them to not reserve a screening time for the film. A teaser was released, but it was stated to be a look test, not the final cut.

While Chakda ‘Xpress has been left on the shelf, Anushka Sharma remains in the news. Most recently, she penned an emotional note to husband cricketer Virat Kohli about his Test retirement:
“They’ll talk about the records you broke… but I’ll remember the tears you never showed, the battles no one saw.”
It was a stark reminder that while our careers may pause, our emotions definitely do not.
