Arijit Singh Speaks On The ‘Gerua’ Controversy, Says ‘If Swami Vivekananda Had Dressed In White…’

Arijit had performed a line from the Gerua song ‘Rang de tu mohe gerua’ at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) 2022.

Popular ‘Tum Hi Ho’ song fame lead singer Arijit Singh, recently broke up his silence on the ‘Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua’ controversy. The singer slammed back to the controversy that had started after several reports surfaced in December, 2021 that police had denied permission for his February concert in Kolkata. The BJP party had claimed that this was because Arijit had performed a line from the Gerua song ‘Rang de tu mohe gerua’ at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) 2022.

For the first time, Arijit bashed out at the controversy surrounding ‘Rang de tu mohe gerua’ at a concert that recently took place in Kolkata. Arijit said, “So much controversy over a colour, it is strange. If Swami ji wore white, would there be controversy over white too?”

CM Mamata Banerjee and the audience demanded Arijit Singh to sing a song as soon as he approached the stage at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) 2022 in December. Given that Shah Rukh Khan was in the audience and the song was from his film ‘Dilwale’, he complied by performing Gerua. He sang a verse from ‘Rang de tu mohe gerua’. Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Prosenjit, Rani Mukerji, Shatabdi Roy, Arijit Singh, and other celebrities were present at the event.

Reports surfaced a few days later claiming that the February 18 concert by Arijit Singh had been postponed. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), the party in power, and the opposition BJP engaged in a slinging of insults as the BJP claimed Mamata Banerjee was insulted by Arijit’s music selection. Gerua, who has consistently voiced her displeasure at the ‘saffronisation’ of Indian politics.

Since a G20 event was also scheduled in the same location, West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim had made it clear that permission had not been given for Arijit Singh’s concert. BJP was politicking the situation, TMC spokesman Kunal Ghosh claimed in response to the accusations.
