Aryan Khan is currently the talk of the town with his successful directorial debut, the web series The Ba*ds of Bollywood. Following the show’s positive reception, the young filmmaker has given his first major interview, where he opened up about his biggest inspiration: his father, superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Aryan shared how SRK was the one who first introduced him to the “magic” of how movies are made.
Learning The ‘Magic’ From King Khan
Speaking to Variety, Aryan fondly recalled how his father would break down the complexities of filmmaking for him as a child. He explained that SRK’s knowledge isn’t just limited to acting. “My father himself is extremely in-depth about the aspects of filmmaking, whether it is VFX, lighting, camera work – whatever,” Aryan said. “And ever since I was a kid, he would show me this – ‘You don’t actually get shot. This is how it happens.’ Or, how do you make a plane fly through the sky without actually making a plane fly? And all of that is, obviously, like magic to a child.”
A Family Film Project During Lockdown
Aryan also shared a fun story about how the Khan family’s love for cinema led to a special project during the lockdown. With everyone at home, he, along with SRK and his sister Suhana Khan, decided to make a short film. “We wrote one during lockdown as well, which we shot at home because we had two years of not much to do,” Aryan revealed. He added that he took on a technical role for this family project, saying, “We filmed it with my sister and my dad, and I was just the DOP on that one.”
On The Tone Of His Debut Show
The title and theme of The Ba****ds of Bollywood have been a big talking point. Aryan spoke about the creative approach his team took, aiming for a tone that was funny without being hurtful. “We wanted to be self-deprecating, but not disrespectful anywhere,” he explained. Aryan emphasized the importance of being able to laugh at oneself, especially when making a show about the industry. He mentioned that the industry members were very sporting, and his team made sure not to cross any lines into disrespect.
