Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari On Narayana & Sudha Murthy Biopic: ‘It’s A Complicated Story, Still Writing It With Rohan Murty’

Filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari shares that the biopic on Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and his wife Sudha Murty is still in the writing stage, calling it a “complicated story” shaped in close collaboration with their son Rohan.

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, a filmmaker well-known for crafting emotional dramas like Bareilly Ki Barfi and Panga, shared an update about the much-anticipated film about Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murty that had been announced back in 2021. The biopic is still in development, with Tiwari revealing the writing process is still incomplete.

Writing With Rohan Murty, Script Still Evolving

Discussing the film in a recent conversation, Ashwiny shared:

“I am still writing. It is complex to tell. I am in touch with the family and go through the script with their son there Rohan Murty. It will take its own sweet time.”

The story of Narayana and Sudha Murthy — from humble beginnings to one of India’s most respected power couples — has a timeline that spans decades, social turmoil, and entrepreneurial eras. This sort of emotional and intellectual complexity adds to the challenge and power of scripting.

Devika Rani Film On Hold, But Tiwari’s Voice Stays Strong

Tiwari also confirmed another long-bubbling biopic — about the first female star of Indian cinema Devika Rani and filmmaker Himanshu Rai — is currently on hold.

“That is on hold right now. The studio has changed. This is the past,” she concluded.

In an industry that has undergone some changes, Tiwari is still committed to original storytelling. In a post-pandemic Bollywood losing its mind in franchise land and 100-crore club aspirations, she remains one of the few advocates for content-driven cinema.

Tiwari’s Take On Box Office-obsessed Culture

“Did anyone ask me how much Nil Battey Sannata earned at box-office? Such aspect was never part of our conversation. Javedji has once told me — no one remembers box-office numbers of the movies that have a continuing conversation,”

She said, offering a stinging critique of the current state of Hindi cinema.

Ashwiny also expressed her displeasure with “checklist culture” that sometimes seems to run rampant in the industry, mentioning how she has also been asked many times to do Bareilly Ki Barfi 2.

“But then you are making a film to just tick some boxes. It would be hard to persuade me to do that.”

Current Projects: Web Film In Progress

Currently, she is working on a web film, given her vast storytelling style. Meanwhile, anticipation is growing for movement on the Narayana–Sudha Murthy biopic, which may be slowly unfolding but is still one of the most awaited stories with deep roots in a real-life Indian legacy.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Because of remakes and heartless sequels, it has never been easier for an original voice to shine its light in a fictional world. Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is one of those original voices that are now rising into reality.

The Narayana–Sudha Murthy biopic languishes in development hell, but it will be worth the wait if we look at what Tiwari has created before. With Rohan Murty‘s sensibility as fodder for narrative, this could be a warm and intellectual cinematic work that is made up of more than virtue signals; it is part and parcel of Indian, middle-class values, forged in the crucibles of academic discourse and post-colonial struggle.
