A new chapter begins for the romcom franchise with a refreshing lead pair
In exciting news for romcom fans, the popular Ginny Weds Sunny is getting a sequel, and this time the original lead pair, Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam, are not reprising their roles. Instead, the sequel will feature Avinash Tiwary and Medha Shankar, who are set to star together for the first time ever.
Produced by Vinod Bachchan, Ginny Weds Sunny 2 is expected to retain the vibe of the original while making the overall emotional experience and visuals bigger. This time, Prasshant Jha will be directing Ginny Weds Sunny 2 as Navjot Gulati did with the first, while “promising double the fun, double the drama”.
New faces, same flavour
The original was a light-hearted rom-com that aired on digital in 2020 during the pandemic and was watched by many viewers due to the fact that it had released directly on digital. After its success on digital platforms, the creators saw the potential to make it a franchise. This time around, they have decided to change the story a bit by pairing two new actors together to expand the viewer base.
A trade source disclosed, “Producer Vinod Bachchan was looking to create a new pairing, and that’s how he has locked Avinash Tiwary and Medha Shankar and will start other casting for the ensemble once he has finalised the studio and digital partners.”
Expanding the Ginny Weds Sunny world
The sequel will further the funny, colourful world of the first part, as well as get deeper into the emotional arcs of the characters. The creators intend to keep the soul of Ginny Weds Sunny while transforming it for a new chapter—and a new cohort of audience.
What’s next?
With the script locked and pre-creative prep underway, and sourcing for supporting characters likely starting shortly, discussions with major studios and OTT platforms are in progress. This reboot intends to blend freshness and familiarity—bringing back the feel-good vibe that the first instalment was celebrated for, but in a grown-up way.
