Awarapan 2 has found a formidable new force in Shabana Azmi. The National Award-winning actor has joined the Emraan Hashmi starrer as Nafisa, a character designed to shake up Shivam’s emotionally bruised world and add a darker, more commanding layer to the sequel.
The casting instantly raises the stakes for the Vishesh Films franchise. Across more than five decades and over 150 films, Shabana Azmi has built one of Indian cinema’s most respected bodies of work, but Awarapan 2 gives her a rare negative shade. Nafisa enters the story as a quietly authoritative presence from the criminal world, and her arrival is expected to alter the course of Shivam’s journey in a sharply unexpected way.

Writer Bilal Siddiqui first shaped the character from within, giving Nafisa her psychology, menace and the narrative weight needed to affect Shivam’s life. The outward identity of the character, however, came through producer Vishesh Bhatt’s creative instinct. By placing a woman at the centre of Shivam’s conflict, the story found a new emotional and moral dimension.
That decision led the makers to Shabana Azmi. She joined the cast of Awarapan 2 on her birthday, 18 September 2025, adding a personal note to a casting decision already heavy with cinematic history. The Bhatt family’s bond with Shabana goes back decades, through films, conversations and close industry ties. For Vishesh Bhatt, her presence carries meaning beyond a professional collaboration.

What Awarapan 2 Brings Back
Awarapan 2 is directed by Nitin Kakkar, written by Bilal Siddiqui and produced by Vishesh Bhatt under Vishesh Films. The film stars Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi, with Emraan returning to the world of Shivam after the 2007 romantic crime drama Awarapan.
The sequel brings Shivam back into a world shaped by crime, redemption, love and sacrifice. His choices are tested again as new relationships and conflicts push the story into more intense emotional territory. Awarapan 2 releases in cinemas worldwide on 14 August 2026.
Shabana Azmi’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Shabana Azmi was recently seen in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, alongside Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra and Jaya Bachchan. The same year, she appeared in R Balki’s sports drama Ghoomer, headlined by Saiyami Kher and Abhishek Bachchan.
On streaming, she featured in Dabba Cartel in 2025, adding another sharp ensemble role to her OTT slate. Her international television work also included Halo, where she played Admiral Margaret Paragonsky across its 2022 to 2024 run.
