Vir Das is heading somewhere few would have predicted next. The performer best known for sharp wit, streaming specials and urbane screen presence has announced Baara Number, a found-footage horror film that pulls him decisively into a darker, more unsettling space. Backed by his banner Zazu Productions, the film will begin shooting in June in Mumbai and marks his latest collaboration with Kavi Shastri.
The reunion adds an intriguing layer to the project. Das and Shastri previously worked together on Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, and Baara Number now takes that creative partnership in a completely different direction. Das will co-direct the film with Shastri and also feature in its ensemble cast, making this a hands-on move that places him at the centre of the film both behind and in front of the camera.

What makes Baara Number stand out is not just its genre label, but the kind of horror it is aiming to explore. The makers have described the film as a found-footage story that blends “psychological depth with atmospheric storytelling” while digging into “both external tension and internal human emotions.” That points to a horror film built less on familiar jump scares and more on creeping dread, mood and emotional fracture.
For Das, that is a striking departure. His screen and stage image has long been built on observational comedy, performance rhythm and pointed commentary. Horror, especially in the found-footage format, demands a very different kind of control, one driven by tension, silence and unease. Baara Number immediately feels notable because it asks Das to channel those instincts into fear rather than laughter.
A Horror Film Rooted In Mood, Not Familiar Tropes
The early creative details suggest that Baara Number is being developed with a clear tonal identity. Rather than presenting itself as a conventional supernatural thriller, the film is being framed as an atmospheric horror piece with a psychological core. That distinction gives the announcement extra weight at a time when audiences are responding strongly to horror stories that rely on immersion and mood instead of formula.
At this stage, the Hindi film is confirmed to be backed by Zazu Productions, directed by Vir Das and Kavi Shastri, and scheduled to go on floors in June 2026 with its first shoot in Mumbai. Das is also part of the cast, although the wider ensemble has not yet been unveiled.

That is what makes this announcement especially fascinating in the context of Das’ recent run. He was last seen in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, which released in theatres in January 2026 and began streaming on Netflix on April 1, 2026. Before that, he featured in the 2024 series Call Me Bae on Prime Video, while his Netflix special Vir Das: Fool Volume arrived in July 2025 and kept him firmly in the space audiences most readily associate with him, smart, polished comedy.
Seen together, those projects reinforced a public image rooted in humour, timing and conversational ease. That is precisely why Baara Number lands as such an arresting next step. It does not arrive after a long build-up of dark roles or genre detours. It arrives when Das still feels most identified with comedy, which makes this move into horror all the more unexpected.
