There are film reveals, and then there are moments designed to signal scale, ambition, and cultural weight in one stroke. Ramayana has now done exactly that. The first official glimpse of Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama is finally out, giving audiences their earliest look at one of Indian cinema’s most closely watched mythological adaptations.
The teaser places Kapoor at the emotional centre of the project, while underlining the film’s global ambition. Backed by Namit Malhotra and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is being mounted as a two-part theatrical event, with the first instalment scheduled for a worldwide Diwali 2026 release and the second part lined up for Diwali 2027.

The newly unveiled first look introduces Kapoor’s Rama with a tone that leans into reverence rather than spectacle alone. Tiwari summed up the core of the story in a statement, saying, “Ramayana’s greatness lies in its emotional richness. At its heart, it is not just about good and evil, but about choices, consequences, and the weight of doing what is right. Rama’s journey is deeply human and that is what we have tried to stay true to.”
Kapoor also spoke about approaching the role with humility. “I don’t think I’m here to represent Rama. I’m here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity to him that is very rare; and trying to understand and imbibe that has been a deeply humbling experience,” he said.
Confirmed cast members include Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana. Apart from them, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Bobby Deol, among others are also expected to be a part of this venture.
The makers have also brought together Hans Zimmer and A. R. Rahman for the music, a pairing that immediately sets this adaptation apart within the mythological space. The film is produced by Prime Focus Studios in association with the eight-time Academy Award-winning VFX studio DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.
A Global-Scale Mythological Adaptation
What makes this reveal land with such force is the creative positioning behind it. Rather than selling Ramayana only as a star-led fantasy spectacle, the first glimpse pushes emotion, restraint, and moral gravity to the front. That is a significant tonal choice for a story whose screen legacy in India is often shaped by devotion and familiarity as much as visual grandeur.
Tiwari’s filmography suggests that emotional clarity will be central to the adaptation. His strongest work has traditionally balanced scale with intimacy, and that sensibility may be crucial for a narrative as culturally embedded as Ramayana. The decision to unveil Kapoor’s Rama through mood and character, instead of an action-heavy montage, signals that the makers are trying to build trust as much as anticipation.
That choice also creates a natural bridge to the bigger question around the film, why Kapoor’s casting has drawn such sustained attention.
Why Ranbir Kapoor’s Casting Carries Weight
Kapoor arrives at Ramayana at a particularly interesting point in his career. In the last few years, he has moved between very different star registers, from the romantic charm of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar to the dark intensity of Animal, after headlining Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva in 2022. Casting him as Lord Rama asks for something else entirely: stillness, discipline, and spiritual authority rather than volatility or swagger.
