Just four days before one of the most closely watched box office faceoffs of the season, Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2 have hit an unexpected roadblock. Both films are scheduled to arrive in cinemas on August 14, 2026, but as of Monday, August 10, advance booking had still not opened, thanks to a tense standoff over show allocation that has left exhibitors scrambling, especially in the single-screen circuit.
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that the biggest sticking point is the aggressive show demand being made for Batwara 1947. PVR Inox Pictures, which is distributing the Sunny Deol-led film, has sought complete control of shows in single-screen cinemas. That has immediately complicated matters for exhibitors who also want to accommodate Awarapan 2, another film expected to attract a strong mass-market audience.
Show-Sharing Standoff Delays Ticket Sales
A trade source said, “PVR Inox Pictures, the distributors of Batwara 1947, have demanded all the shows in single-screen cinemas. This has put single-screen exhibitors in a difficult position because if they agree to the demand, they won’t be able to screen Awarapan 2 at all. And just like Batwara 1947, Awarapan 2 is also expected to appeal strongly to the mass audience. Meanwhile, the distributors of Awarapan 2 are open to sharing shows in single-screen theatres.”
The same source added, “PVR Inox Pictures has also asked for seven shows a day in two-screen theatres, 10 shows in three-screen multiplexes, 12 shows a day in four-screen cinemas, and 15 shows a day in five-screen multiplexes. This demand, too, has caused some discomfort among exhibitors.”
The pressure is sharper because exhibitors are not juggling just two new Hindi releases. They are also trying to protect screens for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which continues to pull audiences and remains an important holdover title for cinemas heading into the Independence Day frame.
An exhibitor also flagged the continuing strength of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. “Let’s not forget that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is rock-steady at the box office. It collected Rs. 35 crores on its second Sunday and is expected to continue performing even after the release of Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2. Many properties would want to retain shows for Spider-Man as well. With the kind of show-sharing demands being made by the team of Batwara 1947, balancing all three films becomes extremely difficult.”
That extra layer has turned an already competitive release weekend into a genuine exhibition puzzle, with every show count now carrying unusually high stakes.
Why This Independence Day Faceoff Matters
This is why the August 14 corridor has become unusually volatile for cinema owners. It is not simply a case of splitting screens between two fresh releases. Exhibitors are being forced to balance distributor expectations, screen capacity, audience pull in mass circuits, and the staying power of an established Hollywood performer, all at the same time. Until that equation is settled, the delay in opening advance sales is likely to remain the most immediate sign of the standoff.
At the centre of that clash are two distinctly positioned Hindi titles. Batwara 1947 is a completed period drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under Aamir Khan Productions, with Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal and Shabana Azmi leading the cast. Awarapan 2 is a completed action romance directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt for Vishesh Films, starring Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi and Suvinder Vicky. With both films carrying different but substantial theatrical appeal, exhibitors are now waiting for a workable screening formula that can unlock bookings before Friday’s release.
