Before Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Yash Chopra Had Conceived Pathan Over 40 Years Earlier

Long before Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan became a full-scale big-screen event, Yash Chopra had already imagined a film titled Pathan. That striking detail gives the 2023 blockbuster an entirely new lineage inside the Yash Raj legacy. The version Yash Chopra conceived in the 1980s never went on floors and was ultimately shelved in the shadow of the Afghan-Russia conflict. Decades later, Pathaan, directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, released on January 25, 2023 with Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham leading the cast.

What makes that revelation land so powerfully is the sense of continuity it creates. A title that once belonged to an unrealised Yash Chopra vision eventually returned in a different cinematic age, this time attached to one of Shah Rukh Khan’s biggest career milestones. The source’s central claim is precisely that Yash Chopra had conceived Pathan over 40 years earlier, a fascinating creative echo that now makes Pathaan feel like more than a modern franchise success. It feels like a delayed chapter in a story the banner had once wanted to tell.

Umesh Mehra said, “We got a proposal to screen Russian films in our theatres. Russian films generally didn’t work in India. But my father, F C Mehra, decided to screen them, and that helped us form a bond with the Russians. They then invited all of us to the Tashkent Film Festival. Raj Kapoor used to attend it frequently as he was very famous there.”

He added, “This was a time when my father was planning 2-3 co-productions with Russians. One film was Pathan; I still have its script. That title rights now rest with Yash Raj Films. Interestingly, it was Yash Chopra who was going to make Pathan! It was going to be made with a huge star cast. The other film we were planning was Mirza Ghalib. It was written by Gulzar and he was also going to be its director.”

Umesh Mehra continued, “This was the time when a conflict broke out between Afghanistan and Russia. Hence, Pathan was shelved. Mirza Ghalib also didn’t materialize as it was a poetry-driven film and you can’t make such a movie in two languages. The Russian version would not have the same impact; the effect would have been lost in translation.”

Umesh Mehra then said, “From Tashkent, we flew to London to meet our family. We had a layover in Moscow, where we discussed the co-production plan that had fallen through. The Russian team asked us if we had any other stories. Suddenly, my father said, ‘How about we make a film on Alibaba and the Forty Thieves?’ Everyone liked the idea. My dad was then asked, ‘But who’ll direct it?’ Without any hesitation, he pointed at me and replied, ‘He’ll direct!’ That’s how such a big, ambitious film landed in my lap.”

Shah Rukh Khan’s Action Dream Completes An Old Chopra Circle

That larger connection becomes even more compelling when placed against Shah Rukh Khan’s own long-stated desire to do a full-blooded action film with the Chopras. Recalling an earlier phase of his creative journey with Aditya Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan said, “I have had this big desire to do an action film, ever since I entered the film industry. When I and Aditya started off, he wrote an action film for me. I never thought I could do romance or social drama. But one day, he came to me and said, ‘Can we drop this idea, Shah Rukh? I’ve got a love story to do.’”

The quote reveals that the action impulse had existed in this collaboration from the very beginning, even if it took years to find its final form. Shah Rukh Khan’s recollection now sits uncannily close to the revived account of Yash Chopra’s shelved Pathan, making the title’s eventual rebirth through Pathaan feel even more meaningful.

Another Shah Rukh Khan quote adds a playful but telling finishing touch to that journey. Speaking about how he came aboard Pathaan, he said, “This time when he said Pathaan, it was COVID and just a little shooting was allowed. I quickly jumped on it and told my team, ‘Let’s do it before he cancels.’”

From A Shelved 1980S Idea To Shah Rukh Khan’S New Action Era

That is what gives this story its real charge. The title moved from an abandoned Yash Chopra concept to a defining Shah Rukh Khan headline, and it now also sits at the start of his current action-heavy phase.

After Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan followed it with Jawan and Dunki in 2023, and his next confirmed theatrical release is King, dated for December 24, 2026. Instead of feeling like a detached career update, that next move reads as the continuation of a trajectory that Pathaan decisively unlocked, with an old Chopra idea unexpectedly standing at the emotional beginning of it all.
