In a time that could alter India’s theatrical-release marketplace, Bhool Chuk Maaf — Maddock Films’ forthcoming rom-com starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi — could indeed become the first significant Hindi production to opt to premiere on OTT two weeks after it has opened theatrically.

From Legal Dispute To Cooperative Ambassadors: What Was Going On Inside Maddock’s 5-Hour Meeting With PVRInox

Earlier this week, the HQ for Maddock Films in Mumbai was the site of an unprecedented 5-hour meeting that brought together 4 significant players in the film industry:

  • Dinesh Vijan (Maddock Films)
  • Kamal Gianchandani, Thomas D’Souza, and Rajender Jyala (PVRInox)

The intent of the meeting was to iron out the increasing friction that existed over Bhool Chuk Maaf‘s proposed launch on Amazon Prime Video just 14 days after the theatrical release, a significant departure from the 8-week exclusivity window that India’s exhibitors have defended for years.

The Resolution: 2 Weeks, Future Agreements, and Potential Precedent

As per trade sources, Amazon’s internal scheduling pressures were resulting in an earlier premiere schedule than originally planned. Maddock found themself in a position that meant securing the cooperation of the exhibitor. What began as contention reportedly turned into a referral deal based on future favour.

“Initially a 4-week window was proposed. But Amazon’s push was strong and they were adamant,
In the end, both sides agreed to a 2-week OTT release (with Maddock having given PVRInox preference on distribution of next titles),” said one source.

The Negotiation Also Included Talking Points On

  • Film screen allocation disparity for Mid-budget films
  • Exhibitor policies that are rigid in a post-COVID, OTT-centric reality

Dinesh Vijan apparently asked directly if an 8-week commitment from the Producer guarantees for Exhibitors, 8 weeks of fair screens and showtimes. That struck home,” said an informant.

What This Means For The Industry: A One-Off or The Normal?

Bhool Chuk Maaf could be viewed as a test case for a hybrid future, where mid-sized film titles can explore shorter windows in the theatre (while not entirely skipping theatres).

While PVRInox is apparently communicating internally that the shortened window is a result of “legal tweaks”, the trade rumour suggests otherwise — that this was a collaborative internal peace on a longer-term mutual interest.

With digital platforms incentivising premium placement for time-sensitive strategies in distribution channels, producers feel pressured to reduce wait times, and as soon as the model is approved commercially, you can rest assured other filmmakers could follow precedent — to potentially weaken the exhibitor’s control over theatrical norms.
