Producer Vashu Bhagnani is embroiled in a serious dispute with Netflix. Following the poor performance of his recent film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Bhagnani has accused the streaming giant of cheating him over the rights to three films: Hero No. 1, Mission Raniganj, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
Vashu Bhagnani Claims Netflix Cheated Him On 3 Films
In an interview with the Economic Times, Bhagnani claimed that Netflix “cheated and conspired against the rights” of his productions. He has filed a complaint against Los Gatos Production Services India, which handles Netflix’s content investments in India, as well as Zoo Digital India and several executives from both companies. This complaint has prompted the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police to launch an inquiry.
Bhagnani alleges that he has not received Rs 47.37 crore for the subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights to the films, as stipulated in their content license agreement.
He argues that his company, Pooja Entertainment, was forced to renegotiate the terms of this agreement and was pressured to hand over one of the films to Zoo Digital India. This early exposure, according to Bhagnani, has damaged both the film’s reputation and his financial interests.
Streaming Giant DENIES His Allegations
Netflix responded to the accusations with a firm denial. A spokesperson stated, “These claims are completely unfounded. Indeed, it’s Pooja Entertainment that owes Netflix money. We have a strong track record of partnership with the Indian creative community and are working with the authorities to resolve this dispute.”
The police investigation has included questioning executives from Los Gatos Production Services. A senior officer confirmed that a decision on whether to file a First Information Report (FIR) will be made after the inquiry concludes.
This conflict dates back to May 2021. Pooja Entertainment had struck a deal with Los Gatos Production Services for the SVOD rights under a content license agreement. Bhagnani claims that his company invested Rs 645 crore in production and marketing, while the other party was obliged to pay Rs 281 crore as per their contract.
